Early Years - Public Health, Western Zone, NSH

Early Years - Public Health, Western Zone, NSH We support families in the early years from prenatal to the age of three in the Western Zone of Nova

Public Health’s support for families begins during pregnancy and then extends into the first few years of a child’s life, up to age five. When you are first connected with Public Health Early Years, a Public Health Nurse (PHN) will talk to you during pregnancy or after birth to find out which service best suits the unique needs of your family. A PHN will also meet with you in the hospital once you

’ve had your baby to help with your next steps. If you adopted your child, you can connect directly with Public Health Early Years for support.

Your baby was born knowing when to eat and when to stop. Responsive feeding is about tuning into those natural cues. You’re not spoiling your baby by feeding them when they’re hungry, and you’re not wasting food when they’ve had enough. You’re helping them grow lifelong skills — one feeding at a time.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿:

When your baby starts showing signs of hunger, like becoming more alert, rooting or turning toward you, they’re asking for care and connection. When they slow down, turn away, or lose interest, they’re letting you know they’ve had enough.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:

Honouring these moments teaches your baby that they can trust their body, and their caregiver. Over time, this builds healthy eating patterns, body awareness, selfregulation, and a positive relationship with food.

𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽:

Public Health Nurses offer a variety of supports to help with infant feeding, including learning your baby’s cues and developing techniques for long-term success.
