A month ago today, I stepped on the TEDx stage to further women's health, specifically how your body responds to hormonal changes and what you can do about it.

I don't want anyone slipping through the cracks. I want us all to get the care that moves you closes the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

Having your health (and not being held back by it) isn't only a personal act, but a powerful, political tool for shaping the world around you. And, this is a time where we need more compassion-driven leaders than ever before.

My talk is finally up on the official TEDx YouTube channel. Go check it out. Share it far and wide
Let me know your thoughts ❤️ The link's in my bio.

Don't shoot the messenger, folks!

Drink spearmint tea if you like it.

It likely won't get rid of your acne or facial hair growth.

I know acne and hair growth where you don't want it is HARD!

BUT, There are better solutions out there for your acne and hirsutism, especially if you have PCOS*. I want you to spend your time, effort, and money on the things that actually work.

*Did you know that PCOS is now PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome)?!

Follow along and reach out if you're in Ontario and looking for a naturopathic doctor to help you out.

Not in Ontario? Check out the PCOS episode of my podcast, Phase to Phase, all about acne, hirsutism, and hair loss.

Polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) → Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

Is this a better representation of what the condition is and entails? YES!

Does this automatically mean better care? No.

Will there be growing pains accompanying this change? You bet.

Does it change the nature of the condition you have as someone with PCOS? No.

Is the name change getting a lot of attention, creating awareness? YES!

Was this change necessary? No.

Would these resources have been “better” spent on advocacy, clinical education for practitioners, research for treatment? Maybe.

Is there still a LOT of work to be done? Heck yes.

These are some of my initial thoughts as the announcement goes public + things I’ve been mulling over for years as a name change has been discussed in PCOS circles for many years.

The biggest reminder I’ll leave for you:
Regardless of the name, the most important parts of this condition = you + your care.

Do words hold power? Can a diagnosis that better defines a condition be helpful? Of course.

Cortisol has become pop culture shorthand for simply existing in a stressful world.

Cortisol belly. Cortisol face. "It's probably your cortisol" when someone is feeling unwell while being stressed out.
It's really easy to blame cortisol for ruining your health, body, and life. But, we all NEED cortisol. It's what got you and me up this morning.

As Dr. Jordan Robertson, ND explains in this clip from the latest episode of Phase to Phase: The Hormone Health Show, cortisol is elevated in times of physiological (di)stress, but it isn't *causing* the distress.

It's simply around, doing its job.

Check out the full episode for what wellness culture gets RIGHT about cortisol, what it gets WRONG, and how to build your body's true capacity and resilience. It's up wherever you get your podcasts and on YouTube (or hop on over to phasetophase.ca).

Jordan Robertson is the founder of The Confident Clinician, a database, clinical decision-making tool and home for over 700 full-time members. On a mission to elevate integrative and naturopathic medicine to the standards of care that conventional medicine practices, she’s known for helping clinicians see their own potential, inspiring curiosity, vulnerability and “mind-changing” and for giving clinicians the push they need to become the best at what they do.

"But what about the radiation from mammograms?" is a question both Dr. Ashley Chauvin, ND MSCP and I get in clinical practice.

It's a valid question, especially since we're constantly told to avoid radiation, so walking into a machine that intentionally exposes you to it can feel counterintuitive.

In the latest episode of Phase to Phase: The Hormone Health Show, Dr. Chauvin answers this question by offering much-needed context. The point of screening is to find cancer before you can *feel* it (in the populations at the highest risk); we're hoping to catch abnormalities at their earliest, most treatable stages.

Sure, a mammogram uses radiation, but the dose is really low! (Also, we routinely get exposed to radiation from the environment and even when flying.)

The life-saving benefit of early detection exponentially outweighs the minuscule risk of the scan itself--and that's what Dr. Chauvin really wants you to remember.

To understand when to start screening, the utility of other imaging tools like ultrasound, and considerations to reduce your risk of breast cancer, check out the full episode at phasetophase.ca or YouTube.

Dr. Ashley Chauvin is a naturopathic doctor focused on integrative cancer care and survivorship. Her work bridges conventional oncology and evidence-based naturopathic medicine, supporting patients through treatment and into long-term health with thoughtful, science-driven care.
