HEPATITIS D & IT'S RELATIONSHIP WITH HEPATITIS B
1. Hepatitis D (HDV) is a severe liver infection that occurs only in people already infected with Hepatitis B (HBV).
2. HDV is called a "defective" or "satellite" virus because it cannot survive without Hepatitis B.
3. Hepatitis D is the most severe form of viral hepatitis, causing faster liver damage than Hepatitis B alone.
4. HDV infection is also known as "delta hepatitis."
5. The virus was discovered in 1977 by Dr. Mario Rizzetto and his team.
6. HDV is a small, circular RNA virus—one of the smallest known human pathogens.
7. Hepatitis D affects an estimated 12 million people worldwide.
8. The highest rates of HDV infection are found in Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.
9. In Nigeria, HDV co-infection rates range from 2% to 31.6% among Hepatitis B patients.
10. More than 20 million Nigerians live with chronic Hepatitis B, placing them at risk for HDV.
