What would life be like if the Sun simply didn’t rise?
In Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway, this sounds like science fiction — but it is a natural part of the Arctic’s annual cycle.
During the polar night, the Sun remains below the horizon for an extended period. In Svalbard, the polar night lasts from approximately November to January, while the opposite season brings months of continuous daylight under the midnight sun.
But why does this happen?
The answer lies in the geometry of Earth itself. Our planet is tilted by about 23.5 degrees, and as Earth travels around the Sun, this tilt creates dramatic seasonal differences at high latitudes.
