“Sacred Hypatia, beauty of words, immortal star of wise culture.”
Hypatia of Alexandria, leader of the Alexandrian School, and the last great mathematician and astronomer of Antiquity. In a moment of profound cultural, social and economic crisis, which would later lead to medieval darkness, Hypatia was a beacon, who always opposed superstition to defend reason and human wisdom.
Her guide was science, her yardstick logic, her weapon reason.
For her defense of reason, for her strenuous fight against obscurantism, superstition and stupidity, she was killed, lynched by a horde of Christian fanatics who believed her to be a witch. A witch. One of the most trite stereotypes that millennia of irrational patriarchy continue to address to women who dare to use our most sublime gift: reason.
However, fanaticism could only wound her body, because her reason has triumphed and is still here to guide us.
At Istituto Hella, we like to believe that our Hella’s obsession for scientific skin care, based on measured facts and effects and not on fantasies or superstitions, is a small but important legacy of Hypatia’s thought and sacrifice.
