Here's an unusual result from a supplement study: in the weeks after people stopped taking it, the level in their blood kept going up.
The compound is ergothioneine, which mushrooms make and which turns up in small amounts in food. Researchers in Singapore ran the first study to give it in pure form to healthy volunteers. 45 young men took part: one group on a placebo, two on a small daily dose for one week. The team then kept testing their blood and urine for another four weeks.
Two things stood out. Less than 4% of what they took came out in their urine. And in their blood, ergothioneine carried on rising long after the last dose. The body didn't just absorb it. It held on to it.
It's one small, one-week study in young men. What it shows clearly is how the body treats ergothioneine, and that points to how to take it: not as an occasional big dose, but as a small, steady habit.
