I think we’ve made healing so complicated that sometimes we forget how to simply live.

We’re constantly being told there is something else we should be doing. Meditating more. Journaling more. Regulating our nervous system. Going to yoga. Doing breathwork. Attending the retreat. Taking the course. Working on ourselves.

And suddenly healing becomes another job.

Another thing we’re failing at when we’re already exhausted.

But what if the thing that brings you back to yourself doesn’t look like healing at all?

Maybe it’s walking through the mountains until your mind becomes quiet. Maybe it’s playing an instrument you haven’t touched in years, putting your hands into the soil, painting, climbing, writing, dancing in your kitchen or cooking dinner while listening to a song you love.

Maybe it’s remembering what made you feel alive before you ever learned what a “healing practice” was supposed to look like.

There is nothing wrong with yoga, meditation, therapy, retreats or any of these beautiful practices. But I think the danger begins when we stop listening to ourselves and start believing there is one correct way to heal.

Because sometimes rushing from work, stressed and exhausted, just to make it to a yoga class so you can “relax” might not be what your body is asking for.

Maybe that evening, healing is walking home slowly.

Maybe spirituality is making dinner without rushing. Washing your hair and actually feeling the warm water. Listening to your child tell you a story. Standing outside for five minutes and noticing the sky.

Maybe the sacred isn’t somewhere we need to travel to.

Maybe it’s here, hidden inside the ordinary moments we keep rushing through while searching for something more profound.

And maybe healing isn’t about endlessly fixing ourselves.

Maybe it’s about learning how to inhabit our lives again.

I wrote much more deeply about this in my latest Substack article on Healing From Within. If this resonates with you, you can read it through the link in my bio and join me there at Alicia Glavanova┃Healing from Within.

Healing is not a straight line.

Some days you’ll feel like you’ve finally made it. Like you can breathe again. Like the heaviness is lifting and you’re slowly becoming yourself again.

And then something happens.

A memory. A trigger. A loss. A hard day.

And suddenly you’re back on the floor wondering how you ended up here again.

But going backwards doesn’t erase how far you’ve come.

We need to stop selling healing as something beautiful and linear. A lifetime of pain, survival, trauma and patterns doesn’t disappear after one therapy session, one retreat or one breakthrough.

Real healing can be messy.

It can be crying until your whole body hurts and laughing an hour later. It can be screaming in the car, needing to be alone, feeling everything you spent years trying not to feel. It can be two steps forward and one step back.

And if you spent years underwater, it may take time to reach the surface again.

That’s okay.

You are allowed to take your time.

You are allowed to heal slowly.

You are allowed to have days where all you can do is keep your head above water.

Because healing was never about becoming perfectly healed.

It’s about slowly finding your way back home to yourself.

I write more deeply about healing, anxiety, the body, motherhood, the stories we carry and the messy journey back to ourselves on my Substack, Healing From Within.

We often go to therapy hoping someone will finally give us the answer.

Tell us what to do.
Take the pain away.
Help us stop repeating the same patterns.
Make us feel like ourselves again.

And I understand that longing. When you’ve been carrying something for years, sometimes you’re simply exhausted. You want someone else to hold it for a while.

But healing was never meant to be something another person does for you.

A therapist can sit beside you. They can help you see what you couldn’t see before. They can hold space for the parts of you that have been buried, give you tools, ask the uncomfortable questions and help you understand where your patterns began.

But they cannot go home and live your life for you.

They cannot set the boundary you keep avoiding.
They cannot leave what is hurting you.
They cannot have the difficult conversation.
They cannot choose rest when your body is begging you to stop.
They cannot practice the things you talked about in the session.

A session can give you insight, direction and support. But what you do with it is where the real change begins.

Healing isn’t something that simply happens to you. It’s something you choose to participate in.

And sometimes the most important work begins when the session ends.

If this kind of deeper conversation resonates with you, I write more about healing, the body, our patterns, relationships and finding our way back home to ourselves on my Substack, Healing From Within. Link in bio.

Sometimes the patterns we struggle the most to change are the ones that once helped us survive.

People pleasing. Always being the strong one. Never asking for help. Staying small. Overthinking everything. Expecting something to go wrong the moment life finally feels good.

We can know these patterns are hurting us and still find ourselves repeating them.

Because trauma doesn’t only live in the story of what happened to us. It can shape what our nervous system learned was safe, what we learned we had to do to receive love, and the roles we took on in order to belong.

And sometimes, when we look at things systemically, we begin to see that some of these patterns have roots that reach beyond our own experiences.

Maybe nobody in your family was allowed to be vulnerable.
Maybe the women before you survived by putting everyone else first.
Maybe love meant sacrifice.
Maybe being seen wasn’t safe.
Maybe there was grief, fear or loss that was never spoken about.

So you learned. You adapted. You carried on.

And years later, you may find yourself living by rules you never consciously chose.

This is why changing a pattern isn’t always as simple as “just stop doing it.”

Sometimes we first need to understand what that pattern has been protecting, where it came from, and why a part of us is still holding onto it.

Healing isn’t about blaming our parents or our past.

It’s about becoming conscious of what we’ve been carrying so we finally have the possibility to choose differently.

You can honor where you come from without repeating everything that came before you.

You needed some of these patterns then.

You may not need them anymore.

Maybe this is why some of us love animals so deeply.

Because with them, love doesn’t feel complicated.

You don’t have to read between the lines.
You don’t have to wonder if you said the wrong thing.
You don’t have to watch every change in their face, their voice, their energy.

They don’t punish you with silence.
They don’t make you earn their affection.
They don’t love you more when you are easy to love.

They simply come closer.

And for someone who learned early that love could be unpredictable, that kind of safety can touch something incredibly deep.

Sometimes an animal becomes the first place where our nervous system learns:

Maybe I can soften here.
Maybe I don’t have to be on guard.
Maybe love can simply feel like love.

Perhaps that’s why losing them hurts so profoundly, too.

Because we don’t only lose an animal.

Sometimes we lose one of the few beings with whom we felt completely safe being exactly who we are❤️

If this touched something in you, I write more deeply about healing, anxiety, grief, the nervous system and finding our way back to ourselves on Healing from Within❤️

No algorithms. No perfect hooks. Just honest words for the parts of us that are still healing.

Sometimes healing isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about realizing that the version of you who survived last year doesn’t have to be the version of you who lives this year.

The same situations may still exist.
The same people.
The same memories.
The same triggers.

But you are allowed to meet them differently.

You are allowed to set boundaries where you once stayed silent.
To rest where you once pushed through.
To let go of what you once carried for everyone else.
To choose yourself without feeling guilty.

Growth doesn’t always look dramatic.

Sometimes it’s simply noticing that something that once destroyed your peace… doesn’t have the same power over you anymore.

You don’t need to run away from your life to heal.

Sometimes you just need to stop abandoning yourself inside of it.

Let yourself grow.

Some things don’t just hurt you.
They change you.

There are experiences that divide your life into a before and an after.

And when people ask, “How did you survive that?” sometimes the truth is…
you didn’t survive it as the person you were.

A version of you disappeared somewhere inside the grief, the fear, the heartbreak, the loss, the nights nobody saw.

And for a long time, you may have desperately tried to find her again.

But healing isn’t always about becoming who you were before.

Sometimes it’s about grieving her.
Honoring everything she carried.
Thanking her for getting you as far as she could.

And slowly meeting the person who came out the other side.

Different.
Softer in some places.
Stronger in others.
More aware of what matters.
More protective of her peace.

Maybe you were never meant to go back.

Maybe healing is learning to love the person you had to become❤️

If this touched something in you, leave a ❤️ — you don’t have to explain why.
