🏔️ Planning a mountain tour above 2,500 m this autumn? Help us test HAMIX!

We are looking for hikers and mountaineers who would like to test the pre-release version of the HAMIX app during a real mountain tour before the end of October 2026.

HAMIX allows you to record your route, vital signs and altitude-related symptoms during your tour and gives you access to evidence-based information about high-altitude medicine.

By testing HAMIX in the field, you can help us evaluate how well the app works under real-world conditions — and contribute valuable data for future research in high-altitude medicine.

You can participate if:

you are planning one or more tours above 2,500 m with an overnight stay before the end of October;
you use an Android phone or an iPhone with iOS 16 or newer;
you are willing to use HAMIX during your tour;
and you can complete a 10–15 minute usability questionnaire afterwards.

Interested?

👉 Complete our short entry survey (approx. 2–3 minutes):

The usability study is organized by Universitätsspital Zürich (USZ) and Berner Fachhochschule | Haute école spécialisée bernoise (BFH).

A little over a year ago, we asked for your help.

We wanted to better understand what people travelling to high altitude need from a digital high-altitude medicine app. Many of you took part in our surveys and shared your experiences, expectations and ideas.

Over the past year, these findings became the foundation for a bachelor’s thesis at Bern University of Applied Sciences – and for the development of HAMIX, the High Altitude Medicine Information Exchange.

Today, HAMIX combines:

🏔️ structured self-monitoring of symptoms, vital signs and altitude
📊 trends to help users follow their own progression over time
📚 evidence-based information on high-altitude medicine
🔬 a research platform designed to support future scientific studies

The project has been developed in collaboration with experts in high-altitude medicine at University Hospital Zurich.

The bachelor’s thesis is now completed – but HAMIX continues.

We are now taking the project into its next phase, with further development, scientific studies and the goal of making HAMIX a useful digital tool for both people travelling at high altitude and high-altitude medicine research.

A big thank you to everyone who supported our surveys and contributed to the first steps of this project.
