🫣 I really wasn’t expecting to be here again.
Yesterday I had surgery after completely tearing a tendon in my foot, just as I was beginning to feel that life was opening up again after my shoulder surgery.
I was about to start teaching my beloved group fitness classes again, which honestly meant so much to me. It felt like getting a familiar part of myself back.
Then came the cancellations. My 40th class reunion back home in Ireland and seeing my family, a trip to Hamburg with good friends, and our long-awaited October holiday.
Quite a lot to take in over a very short space of time.
I am disappointed, of course I am. Acceptance doesn’t mean pretending we are fine with something we are not fine with. For me, it’s more about recognising what I can no longer change and deciding where I want to put my energy instead.
I didn’t choose this, but I can still choose how I want to move through it.
My instinct is already to think ahead. How quickly can I get back? What can I still do? What needs reorganising?
Yet perhaps this time the work is quieter.
To let my body have the time it needs, to accept help, to reduce the load and to work with the capacity I actually have rather than the capacity I wish I had.
That is something I speak about often in my work, and yet living it yourself is always different.
Some parts of life need to slow down for a while, but I am still very much here for my coaching clients and mentees - work I am grateful I can continue.
There will be other classes, other trips, other holidays and other moments with the people I love.
For now, I’m learning to let recovery take the space it needs alongside everything that can still continue.
A heartfelt thank you to my orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Jens Mainzer from in-motion in Wallisellen, and to the wonderful team at Klinik Bethanien for taking such good care of me. I felt very much in safe hands.
We don’t always get to choose what life brings us.
We do get some choice in how we meet it. đź’›
