"Movement enables birth. Knowledge enables movement."

This is the guiding idea of Ulrike Harder, one of the most influential midwives in the German-speaking world.

Who she is:
A midwife for 48 years. She led a labour ward in Saudi Arabia, became a midwifery teacher and initiated Hebammenkunde, the textbook generations of midwives learned from. Many of its birth chapters she wrote and illustrated herself.

What makes her teaching so special:

๐Ÿคฒ She shows, she doesn't just explain. Her trainings are known for hands-on demonstrations of birth positions and mobilisation.

๐Ÿ”„ Every position is a tool. Three different side-lying positions, an optimised hands and knees, and how to help a woman from lying on her back into a deep squat.

๐Ÿค She meets women where they are. Even for a birth on the back, a cloth to pull on and knee pressure can make it work better.

๐Ÿงฃ Rebozo and pelvic mobilisation. Rocking and rolling the pelvis, external pelvic pressure and a side-lying pelvic mobilisation that carries her name.

๐Ÿšจ Clarity in emergencies. Step-by-step guidance on shoulder dystocia and alternatives to fundal pressure.

And for me personally? She once saw a video of me positioning a woman the wrong way, and she scolded me. I'm so grateful she did.

So when she first heard about Vibwife, she was sceptical. Her grandmother used to say: what can be done by hand shouldn't be done electrically. And here I was, showing her a bed that moves.

She looked closely, asked the hard questions and tested it herself. Then she said:
"In my entire career as a midwife, I have never seen an innovation that is so truly about the wellbeing of the woman."

From then on, she gave us her time. Over the years, we refined Vibwife's vibration and movements together in her living room.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip for all midwives: Ulrike has made her teaching videos free for midwives, doctors and educators on her website "geburtshilfe-ulrikeharder.de", with new ones coming this autumn. The videos are in German.

Vibwife is one more tool to support women during birth. Built on knowledge like hers. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

"Founder" was never on my bucket list.

As a young midwife, I didn't dream of business plans, investor meetings or regulatory files.
I just saw something I couldn't let go of: women who wanted to keep moving in labour, and tired bodies, theirs and ours, that couldn't keep going for hours.

Vibwife grew out of one question: what if movement in labour could keep going, even when everyone in the room is exhausted? And I had to grow with it.

Negotiating. Flying across continents. Standing on stages in a language that isn't my first. Many days I felt too small for this role.

Here's what I've learned, simple and real: Growing beyond yourself feels a lot like labour.
You don't feel ready. You do it anyway.
You take it one wave at a time.
And you can't do it alone. You need people who hold you.

My team holds me. My family holds me. And these days in Vietnam reminded me of something I tell women all the time:

I'm allowed to pause between the waves, too.

To every founder building something from the heart, here's what more than ten years with Vibwife have taught me:

The purpose that drives you will sometimes be what takes you to your limits. That doesn't mean you're on the wrong path. It means you care.

Protect the reason you started. And take care of yourself, too. Your work needs you whole.

When you've ridden a wave, let yourself land before the next one comes. That's where growth takes roots.

Thank you for being here and for walking this path with me. โœจ

What role did you never plan for, and grew into anyway?

I was a little girl when I knew: I want to become a midwife.

I know exactly where that wish came from: the first time I was allowed to hold the baby of our former au pair in my arms.

I remember how carefully I held it, barely daring to breathe. So small, so warm, so completely trusting. And I felt something I didn't have words for yet: how precious it is to be there for a new life. That moment never left me.

And I did everything I could to become one. I've stood beside women in some of the most powerful hours of their lives.

But my path turned out to look different than I ever imagined. Today, I spend more time in hospital meeting rooms, on planes, at trainings and on conference stages than in birth rooms.

For a long time, I wondered if that still counts.

During my shifts, my two hands were often not enough. Not enough to keep every woman moving for hours, right when she needed it most.

Today, while I'm on a yoga mat in Vietnam recharging, women in birth rooms far away from me are moving through labour with Vibwife. The gentle movement keeps going, even on the busiest shifts in the middle of the night.

As a little girl, I held one baby in my arms. Today, I'll never meet most of the women and babies Vibwife is there for. I won't see their faces or hear their first cry.

And still, it fulfils me in a different way than being right there, at the pulse of life.

Here's what I've come to feel:
โ€ขโ  โ Every time I explain why movement matters in labour, I'm a midwife.
Every time a woman is supported to move her way, I'm a midwife.

Both of my daughters were born on Vibwife. In those hours I was everything at once: the midwife, the inventor, and simply a woman in labour who needed to be held.

Maybe that's the answer to "who is the woman behind Vibwife": all of it. At the same time.

What did you dream of becoming as a child? Are you on that path, or on a different one? ๐Ÿ’ฌ

Who is the woman behind Vibwife? Honestly, sometimes I don't know either.

For years I've grown into my roles. Midwife. Founder. Mom of two. Most of my energy flows outwards: to my team, to clinics, to my family.

After our workshop in Vietnam, I did something for the first time. I didn't take the fastest way home. I stayed a few more days. Just me.

At my first massage, I asked if I could sleep on the table for half an hour first. I was so exhausted, I knew I'd fall asleep the moment she started. She asked me three times if I really wanted that. She said no one had ever asked her for this before.

And in that moment, it hit me: staying to recharge before going home was exactly the right decision.

Then she began. And I cried.

Every mom of little ones knows this: you're touched all day. Held, pulled, climbed on. Touch becomes something you give, and it's easy to forget to receive it.

As a midwife, I know how powerful touch is. In labour, it needs care, presence and constant communication with the woman in front of you. On that table, I was reminded that its power doesn't end in the birth room. We need it in everyday life too, for ourselves and for each other.

I gave myself space to feel who I am and where I want to go. And I rediscovered yoga, on the mat and in the air.

๐—œ๐˜'๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—œ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ต ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ: to feel held, so she can let go.

I'm deeply grateful for Vietnam's beautiful culture and the warmth of everyone who welcomed me. I'm going home richly gifted, and more present for my work, my family and myself.

This week, I'll share a bit more of the story behind the founder of Vibwife - me.

What helps you come back to yourself when life pulls you outwards? ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

Can a sales team learn birth positions? Yes, by kneeling on a birth bed themselves.

This week in Da Nang, Vietnam, I presented Vibwife in person in Asia for the very first time. I trained LINET distributor teams from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand.

Two days. One pelvis model. A lot of kneeling, leaning and swaying.

Here's what we explored together:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Why so many births still happen lying on the back, even though that position puts weight on the sacrum and leaves less room for the baby
๐Ÿ‘‰ Your pelvis isn't one solid bone. It has joints that can move and make space when you're upright, kneeling or leaning forward
๐Ÿ‘‰ How gentle, continuous movement can keep that space available for hours, even when you're too tired to move yourself

Every country has its own birth culture and its own challenges. Thank you to every participant for your openness, and to for bringing mobile birth to more birth rooms across Asia.

If you're pregnant, try this: kneel, lean forward over a birth ball and let your knees widen a little. Breathe into your lower back. Notice how your pelvis feels when it isn't carrying your weight.

Where in the world are you reading this from? ๐ŸŒ Let's exchange birth experiences in the comments.

If you're heading to the 30th Hungarian National Midwives' Conference in Pรฉcs, come find me.

I'll be at the Palatinus Grand Hotel from September 24 to 26 with a Vibwife on the AVE2 with our LINET and VATNER Medical team. If you want to feel it for yourself and have a real conversation about moving birth forward, that's exactly what we're there for.

I've already met quite a few Hungarian midwives over the past months, and I'm so looking forward to seeing some of you again. And to meeting many more of you for the first time, at the 30th edition of your national conference. That feels like a real honour.

Mobility is what I most want to talk about in Pรฉcs. Upright positions in the first stage of labour are linked to a lower caesarean rate (Cochrane review, Lawrence et al. 2013). And yet as soon as a woman has an epidural or continuous monitoring, or is simply too exhausted to move, she often ends up lying still. That gap is exactly why Vibwife exists: rhythmic movement for the pelvis, even when she can't create it herself.

Will you be in Pรฉcs too? Leave a comment below so we can find each other there.

Hands and knees frustrated me for years. It was never the position.
Two, maybe three contractions, and she wanted out. Her knees were done. Watch the first part of the video: there is movement, but it looks stiff. Like an exercise in the gym. All of her weight loaded onto two small spots.
Nobody told me back then that the position was never the problem. The surface underneath her was.
What changes it:
โœ”๏ธ Level the surface, so her weight lies flat instead of stacking onto the knees
โœ”๏ธ Something to sit back onto, so the knees unload โ€” and every sit-back adds an anteriorโ€“posterior pelvic tilt that can help the head settle deeper into the pelvis
โœ”๏ธ Chest and arms heavy on the ball, weight sinking into the surface
โœ”๏ธ Room between the ball and her knees

As long as her weight rests on two points, she braces. A braced pelvis is carried, not moved.

Once she can put the weight down, her resting upper body becomes the punctum fixum โ€” and the pelvis is free to be the punctum mobile. The movement stays isolated in the pelvis instead of the whole torso swaying along. That is what lets the sacrum tilt and the pelvis keep changing shape while the baby rotates and descends.

A side effect worth knowing: in my experience, the CTG often traces better, too โ€” the belly settles against the surface instead of hanging free, and the transducer holds.

Ulrike Harder โ€” who co-wrote the textbooks most German-speaking midwives learned from, including me โ€” once saw a video of me setting a woman up the wrong way. She didn't just correct me. She scolded me. I'm so grateful she did.

After that, women stayed in this position for as long as they needed โ€” because they could actually rest in it. Many of them even stayed in it for the birth of their baby.

What do you like to use to build this position โ€” and how do you get creative when the materials aren't there?

Ulrike shares her knowledge freely on her website โ€” link in the first comment.

Thank you, Ulrike ๐Ÿ™

A midwife said this about my invention. Fair enough.
A home birth midwife stopped at our stand at ICM in Lisbon and told me she had seen a video of us on Facebook. Her first thought: another over the top medical thing. Then she forwarded it to her colleagues, and they went back and forth about it online.
And I understand that reaction completely. Another invention in birth work feels strange at first. Most of us think: why, we can do this with our hands.

I would rather do it with my hands too. But after enough long births I know what happens to my own strength somewhere in hour twelve, and I know the shifts where three women needed me at once and I could not be at all three beds.
So she came to try it herself, and she asked the thing every midwife asks: does it work in every position, or only in the pretty one from the video.
We did two together. Hands and knees, and inversion. Sitting and side lying work the same way.
So the rule is simple:
- on hands and knees, the knees belong on that zone
- sitting or side lying, the hips belong there
Her face had already changed by then, the moment the movement arrived in her pelvis. What surprised her came after, when I showed her the settings: four movements, and for each one you can change the speed and the range of motion.
She is not the only one who changed her mind. In our clinical study, more than 9 in 10 of the midwives and doctors who used Vibwife said they would recommend it (Monod et al. 2021).
One honest thing, because it comes up in the comments every time: For now, Vibwife is only certified in combination with a birthing bed.
And this is the part that stayed with me: she had every reason to keep scrolling, and instead she walked up to a stand and told me about her own doubts. Midwife to midwife. That means more to me than any demo.
Curious is a good place to start. If you have a question about how it works, ask it here and I will answer it myself.

The epidural takes away the pain. It also takes away something nobody warns you about.

If you've been following me, you know I never stop talking about movement during birth. Today I want to talk about where it gets complicated.

At some point in a long labour, many women reach for an epidural. And I understand that completely. I've stood next to women awake for thirty hours. Shaking. With nothing left. Choosing an epidural then isn't giving up. It's often what lets a woman rest, breathe, and come back to herself.

It's just what happens when your legs stop cooperating. You lie back, and the shifting, swaying movement your body was doing on its own, the movement that helps your pelvis make space, quietly stops.

And yes, I have seen so called walking epidurals, where a woman can still stand and take a few steps. But it isn't the same. That pull to move with every wave, the one that comes from inside you without thinking, is mostly gone.

In many hospitals and countries, leaving the bed isn't permitted once the epidural is in, often for legal reasons. And with cables and monitoring belts on you, finding the position your body wants gets hard.

The same happens without an epidural. After eighteen hours of labour, exhaustion does it too.

That dilemma is why Vibwife exists.

Your pelvis isn't one solid bone. It's a ring with joints that shift as you move. Walking and stairs move it one side at a time, and that asymmetry can open more room where a baby often needs it.

Infinite Harmony guides your pelvis through that same flowing, one side at a time motion. It asks nothing of your legs. It keeps going, including on hands and knees, with an epidural in, in hour twenty six when you have nothing left.

Not forcing. Not pushing harder. Just movement that stays available when it would usually fade.

So, nobody told me you could still "walk" after an epidural. Now you know.

If you've had an epidural: what did nobody tell you beforehand? I'd love to read it. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ

Before I ever trained as a midwife, I already thought I knew what birth looked like.

I had seen it in films. In books. In the way people talked about it. A woman on her back, someone telling her to push harder, everyone waiting for the moment it's over.

It took years, and a lot of women showing me otherwise, before I unlearned it.

Three sentences I believed once:

1๏ธโƒฃ "Stalled labour needs more effort."
Often what's missing isn't strength. It's space. That's the logic behind what you see here: head down, hips up. It can lift your baby gently out of the pelvis so they can settle back in differently. Sometimes going backwards is what lets you move forward.

2๏ธโƒฃ "On your back is normal."
History, not physiology. On hands and knees, Knees wide can give more room at the top, where a baby is still finding their way in. Knees closer with feet wider can open the lower end, for when your baby is working their way out. Flat on your back, your sacrum is underneath you with your body weight on it. It can't tip.

3๏ธโƒฃ "Rest is a pause from labour."
Rest is part of it. Here you see side-lying, with the angle of your pelvis changing slowly and continuously. Your body can keep working while you save your energy.

I'm grateful for the accounts doing this unlearning work every day: Spinning Babies, , .friedliche.geburt and many more. I learned from them, and I still do.
