Managing DMD is a team effort, whether you’re talking about the researchers advancing treatment options behind the scenes, or the many specialists tirelessly working in hospitals and clinics every day, helping patients achieve their fullest potential.
At Santhera Pharmaceuticals we know that caregivers at home are the final - and crucial - member of this team and, together, it’s time to recognise the outstanding round-the-clock effort that lays the foundation for lifechanging care. After all, DMD is not only experienced by patients, but carers too, in every shape and size.

Most people have never heard of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) — but for thousands of families, it shapes everyday life. DMD is a genetic condition that causes muscle damage from an early age, long before symptoms become apparent.

Recognising the early signs such as delayed motor milestones, difficulty climbing stairs or rising from the floor is important, enabling timely access to appropriate care, support, and therapeutic interventions. Some of the most common signs include:
• Gowers’ Sign: When a child ‘walks’ up with their arms to stand up from the floor.
• Delays in motor milestones, such as trouble climbing stairs, running or jumping.
• Enlarged calf muscles

👉 Save and share to help more people recognise the signs. Greater awareness means faster recognition, better care, and improved outcomes.

Although the visible signs of DMD usually don’t appear until a child is between 2 and 3 years of age¹, the disease actually begins to affect the muscles long before birth². These silent changes start while the baby is still growing in the womb, signalling the start of a lifelong process.²

Recognising DMD early and securing a prompt diagnosis is vital so that families can access the right care, support, and interventions without delay.

Managing Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) requires a delicate clinical balance.
