Developmental orthopedics is shaped by two forces: genetics and mechanics.

While genetic predisposition defines the baseline risk for HD or ED, the mechanical environment during growth determines how joints actually form.

Loading patterns influence:

• cartilage mineralisation
• soft-tissue stability
• long-term joint congruency

Movement tells the truth long before structure does.

When a dog works through elevation or dynamic surfaces, subtle asymmetries become visible: changes in propulsion, stance duration, pelvic rotation or stride consistency. These micro-patterns reflect neuromuscular control and early compensation, often before pain is expressed and long before radiographic signs appear.

Objective gait analysis captures these functional signals with high precision. Not to replace clinical assessment, but to deepen it and make it measurable.

Precision matters when working with micro-asymmetries.
IMU-based motion analysis detects changes, far below the threshold of visual evaluation.

These metrics provide insight into:
• stance and swing distribution
• propulsion symmetry
• joint-specific Range of Motion
• pelvic and spinal rotation
• stride-to-stride consistency

Such data enhances differential diagnosis, tracking of treatment response and long-term monitoring. It bridges the gap between subjective impression and quantifiable function, especially in subtle or intermittent cases.

We are very pleased to share that Pain and Behaviour: Understanding the Connection in Dogs is now available in English.

The German edition has been established for years through Kynos Verlag and has helped many veterinarians, therapists and dog professionals better understand the complex relationship between pain and behavioural changes.

With this English edition, we aim to make this knowledge accessible to a broader international audience.

The core message remains clear: Behavioural changes are often not “just behavioural.” They can be an expression of underlying discomfort, chronic pain or functional imbalance.

Understanding this connection changes how we diagnose, communicate and treat.

Even small restrictions in ROM, whether caused by discomfort, joint changes or poor compensation, affect how dogs move, jump, accelerate or recover. Every step has a rhythm. Every rhythm tells a story.

In healthy dogs, gait follows a finely tuned timing pattern, from stance time to swing phase, step frequency and stride duration. But when the body compensates, protects or delays due to pain or dysfunction, that rhythm changes, often in just a few milliseconds.

With our 34-parameter motion analysis, we measure time-sensitive variables that are invisible to the eye but critical to detect early functional changes:
• prolonged stance time on one limb
• shortened swing due to pain
• delayed pelvic rotation
• irregular rhythm in neuromuscular control

This level of temporal precision allows us to identify subtle overloads, early compensation and even neurological asymmetries, often before structural changes appear.
