Paris, 1996.

Six years after FESSH was founded, the first FESSH Diploma Examination brought together the Federation's earliest generation of certified hand surgeons.

Three decades later, more than 1,000 surgeons have passed this examination: a mark of knowledge and professional excellence recognised across Europe. 📝

And that brings us to the present day. Following endorsement by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), the examination became what we know today as the European Board of Hand Surgery Examination.

To mark the anniversary, former Examination Chairs and current examiners share the story behind the EBHS Examination… how it began, how it evolved, and what it represents for the specialty today.

Twelve fellows. Ten Swiss hand centres. Three weeks that reshaped how they think about hand surgery. 🤔

The 2026 FESSH/SSCM Congress Fellowship sent surgeons from across Europe (and beyond!) into some of Switzerland's leading hand units, before bringing them all together at the FESSH Congress in Basel.

They didn't just take home new techniques. They gathered a wider view of how excellent hand surgery comes together, and a new network of colleagues they'll keep for the rest of their careers.
