International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society

International Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Society The ICRS is the main forum for international collaboration in cartilaginous tissue research and joint preservation.

The ICRS is a charitable medical association, founded in 1997 and envisages the scientific research and the exchange of knowledge among physicians, scientists, patients and industry in the field of Cartilage Regeneration & Joint Preservation Recognizing that there is a continuum from cartilage injury to degenerative joint disease we bring together basic scientists, clinical researchers, physicians

, other healthcare providers and members of industry, engaged or interested in the field of articular biology, its genetic basis and regenerative medicine. We seek to improve our patients´ quality of life, decrease their disability and reduce the impact of degenerative joint disease on healthcare systems worldwide by preserving joints and maintaining function. The Society has currently 1200 active members from 65 countries. Our Mission is: Advancing Science & Education of the Prevention & Treatment of Cartilage Disease Worldwide

Prof. Jos Malda from UMC Utrecht (The Netherlands), ICRS First Vice President, discusses the potential of 3D-printed scaffolds for cartilage repair, which provide stability, avoid stress shielding, tailor mechanical properties, guide collagen organization, and mimic other joint tissues. An incredible lecture that highlights the confluence of basic science and clinical practice at the core of our society at the 2024 ICRS Summit in Catania.

EDUC@RT is ICRS’s digital library, providing active members with free access to recorded presentations from the ICRS Summit Catania 2024 and the ICRS 2025 World Congress. Topics include tissue engineering, osteoarthritis, and regenerative therapies.

How far can imaging take us in understanding cartilage, and predicting treatment outcomes?

Watch this short highlight reel from a recent ICRS webinar featuring Prof. Janne Mäkelä and Prof. Felix Eckstein.

Organized by the ICRS Translational Research Committee (TRC), this webinar explores how quantitative CT, advanced MRI, and AI-driven analysis are advancing our understanding of cartilage health, tissue function, and treatment response.

Intra-articular injections remain one of the most widely used treatments for osteoarthritis and cartilage-related joint pain. But are they truly modifying disease progression — or mainly improving symptoms?

👍 Promising clinical impact
Recent reviews and clinical trials suggest that hyaluronic acid (HA), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and combination therapies can reduce pain and improve joint function, particularly in early-stage osteoarthritis. PRP-based approaches may provide longer-lasting clinical improvement and potentially support a more favorable joint environment for cartilage preservation.

😄 Mostly temporary symptomatic relief
Despite increasing use worldwide, evidence for true cartilage regeneration or disease modification remains limited. Variability in PRP preparation, injection protocols, patient selection, and outcome measures continues to challenge standardization and guideline adoption.

In your opinion, which injectable therapy has the greatest future potential for cartilage and joint preservation?

React to vote:
👍 Promising clinical impact
😄 Mostly temporary symptomatic relief

Kai Feng of Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital (Shanghai, China) presented at the 2025 ICRS World Congress in Boston, advanced research on novel drug-delivery approaches using small extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells. These vesicles are engineered with the cartilage-targeted peptide WPD and designed to facilitate the clearance of senescent chondrocytes in articular cartilage through MDM2 inhibition using UBX0101. In animal studies, his team observed reduced cartilage degeneration and alleviation of knee pain in a posttraumatic osteoarthritis mouse model, as well as a marked reduction of senescent cells in cultured human chondrocytes. This work demonstrates the potential for modifying extracellular vesicles with specific targeting ligands and therapeutic agents to address age-related diseases, offering a promising strategy for precision medicine.
