Training and macros get most of the attention—but micronutrients can quietly make or break your performance.
Here are 5 athletes often overlook:
1. Iron
Essential for oxygen transport and energy. Low levels may show up as unusual fatigue, poor endurance, or declining performance—especially in endurance athletes, menstruating athletes, and those eating plant-based diets.
2. Vitamin D
Supports bone health, muscle function, and immunity. Indoor training, limited sunlight, and winter months can increase the risk of low levels.
3. Magnesium
Involved in muscle contraction, energy production, and normal nerve function. Good sources include nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and leafy greens.
4. Calcium
Important for strong bones and normal muscle contraction. Athletes who avoid dairy or consistently underfuel should pay particular attention to their intake.
5. Vitamin B12
Needed for red blood cell formation and normal nervous-system function. It deserves extra attention if you follow a vegan or mostly plant-based diet.
Micronutrients won’t replace enough calories, protein, carbohydrates, sleep, or recovery—but deficiencies can hold back the work you’re already doing.
Focus on a varied diet first. If you experience persistent fatigue, poor recovery, recurring injuries, or an unexplained drop in performance, consider getting tested with guidance from a qualified professional.
Don’t guess. Assess, then address.
