Have you ever left a massage feeling… disoriented, strange, or slightly weak?
I don’t necessarily mean better or worse. Simply with a different sensation.
Maybe you feel lighter, almost as if your body has changed its rhythm. Or perhaps you feel more tired than usual, you suddenly become aware of an area you hadn’t noticed so clearly before, or you simply feel the need to pause and listen to yourself.
It’s something I often notice in my work, and I find it particularly interesting.
Because massage isn’t only about “feeling more relaxed” or going home with less pain. During a treatment, the way we connect with our body and its sensations can also change. I often notice, for example, that someone who complains of pain on the right side discovers that the left side is actually more resistant, guarded, or tense.
That’s why I don’t like to think that a massage necessarily has to be intense or leave you sore in order to be effective.
In my view, sometimes even simple touch can awaken the body’s powerful capacity to sense and become aware of itself. To recognise its own existence and give legitimacy to all of its sensations.
And this leads me to a question:
What if, before the treatment, something simply couldn’t be noticed because we didn’t yet have the awareness to perceive it?
Could what we call a “problem” on one side sometimes be connected to a lack of somatic awareness of the other?
What interests me is what happens during and after the treatment at the level of awareness.
How do you feel when you get off the table?
What changes do you notice when you walk, breathe, and return to your everyday life?
And, perhaps most importantly, how do you carry these new bodily insights with you into your daily life?
Every body responds in its own way, and that is entirely plausible.
And perhaps this is one of the most beautiful aspects of therapeutic massage: not imposing a response on the body, but learning to listen to the one it is already giving you.
If this resonates with you, share your experience in the comments.
