Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium

The event aims to raise awareness of gender-specific differences in medicine and promote dialog between experts, researchers and decision-makers.

Gender medicine is an important part of precision medicine that takes into account gender-specific differences in biology and life circumstances and their influence on diseases in order to develop customized health solutions for the respective gender. The Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium will provide a platform where renowned experts and pioneers in gender medicine will come together to present and further develop the latest findings, innovative approaches and pioneering research projects.

At the Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium 2026, Dr. Carinna Hockham from The George Institute for Global Health, Imperial College London, will speak in Scientific Session 5: “Epidemiology and Prevention.”

Her contribution, “S*x and Gender Differences in Population Health and Disease Prevention,” will highlight how large population cohorts and linked health data can help identify disparities in disease risk and outcomes — and support more s*x- and gender-sensitive approaches in prevention, research, and health policy.

We are pleased to announce further confirmations and program highlights for the Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium 2026 — with a particular focus on Tuesday, October 27.

The second symposium day will open with a keynote by Prof. Dr. Liisa Galea, University of Toronto, Canada:
“Why S*x Matters for Brain Health: Hormones, Stress and Neuroplasticity Across the Lifespan.”

We are also delighted to welcome Estelle Jobson from FSHD Europe for the impulse:
“From Lived Experience to Co-Creation: Closing the Gender Health Gap with Patients.”

Together, these contributions add important perspectives on brain health, women’s mental health, patient engagement, lived experience, and co-creation in research and health care.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alexandra Kautzky-Willer from MedUni Vienna will bring her perspective to this question at the Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium 2026.

As Professor of Gender Medicine and Head of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Vienna General Hospital, her work focuses on metabolic diseases, diabetes, hormonal regulation, and gender-specific medicine.

In an interview, Prof. Dr. med. Sabine Oertelt-Prigione, Professor of Gender-Sensitive Medicine at Bielefeld University and speaker at the Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium 2026, explains why gender medicine does not reduce people to s*x or gender — but helps make medicine more precise.

Women are not a homogeneous group — and neither are men. Age, life stage, metabolism, comorbidities, social conditions, and access to support all shape health, diagnosis, and treatment.

The interview also highlights why research, medical education, and clinical guidelines need to work together to bring gender-sensitive knowledge into everyday care.

Dr. Alex DeCasien will bring this perspective to the Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium 2026.

As Principal Investigator and Head of the Computational and Evolutionary Neurogenomics Unit at the National Institute on Aging, USA, her work explores how age, s*x, and species shape brain structure and function.

In Scientific Session 6, her session “Evolutionary and Biomedical Insights into S*x Differences in the Primate Brain” will show how evolutionary and biomedical perspectives can help us better understand s*x differences in brain health and disease.

Prof. Dr. med. Beatrice Beck Schimmer will open the Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium 2026 with a welcome and introduction to gender medicine and its fundamental change of perspective in medicine.

She is not only a speaker, but also Founder and member of the Steering Committee of the Swiss Gender Medicine Symposium — and one of the driving forces behind its vision and development.

As Vice President Medicine at the University of Zurich and a member of its Executive Board, she brings together clinical expertise, academic leadership, and a strong commitment to research and career development.

Her perspective highlights an important moment for gender medicine in Switzerland: with the UZH chair established in 2024 and the new professorship in Bern, the foundation is growing.

The next step is to build lasting impact across research, education, and health care — through collaboration, national structures, and future partnerships.

In her IMPULSE “The Role of Politics for Equitable Health,” she will highlight why gender medicine is not a niche topic, but an important part of more precise, fair, and effective health care.
