I was an 18-year-old teen mom in this picture. I’d spent my entire senior year of high school pregnant, and in a small town, that felt heavy. The shame was real. So were the whispers. My daddy was 50 here, which is wild because I’m 51 now. We were all so young.
I’d graduated on June 3, brought Justin home on July 1, and had no clue what I was doing. I was just trying to keep a tiny human alive. But somewhere between those sleepless nights and uncertain days, something changed. Justin didn’t become my shame. He became my purpose.
What I couldn’t see then was that by September I’d be sitting in a college classroom. A few years later, I’d graduate right on time and become a middle school teacher. And this little fellow? He turns 33 today and somehow became one of the smartest people I know.
The world has a way of convincing us that one mistake can ruin the rest of our lives. But this picture tells a different story.
My life didn’t end when I became the talk of the town. It didn’t end because I didn’t have all the answers. I just knew I loved a little boy with all my heart, and I trusted God to do what I couldn’t.
Thirty-three years later, I can tell you this: The very thing I was told would ruin my future became one of God’s greatest gifts.
