From Holiday Mode Back To Daily Life: 3 Practices For Staying Resourceful.
For many years, the last day of a holiday was filled with anxiety. I was already thinking about everything waiting for me, all the challenges ahead, and how I would manage it all.
With time, I have found a few simple things that help me stay more resourceful:
1. My morning energy routine is non-negotiable.
It includes breathwork, an energy practice—either yoga or Qigong—and/or some time in nature. Sometimes it is longer, sometimes very short. But I try not to skip it completely.
For me, especially after 40, energy is no longer something I can simply take for granted. I need to consciously create and collect it for the day ahead.
So, if you want to try this: choose one small morning practice and decide on your minimum. Even five minutes. Something realistic enough that you can still do it on a busy day.
2. I bring my attention back to myself during the day.
We become depleted when our attention is constantly directed outward—to work, messages, responsibilities and other people.
I set two or three reminders on my phone. When one rings, I stop for one or two minutes. I sit still, notice my breathing, slow down the exhale and bring my attention back to my body.
That is all. One or two minutes, several times a day.
3. I leave some time unplanned.
Not every free minute needs to be filled with another task.
During the day, I try to find at least one small thing that inspires me or simply gives me pleasure. I ask myself:
What would make me feel good?
It may be a walk, music, silence, a coffee outside, a few pages of a book, or simply doing nothing for a while.
I do not see this as an egocentric way of living. These small moments of attention to ourselves are necessary.
When we have more energy and inner capacity, the people around us also feel it. The quality of our presence—with our loved ones and our colleagues—becomes different.
And most of this costs nothing.
It is simply about bringing your attention back to yourself, even for a few short moments during an ordinary working day full of plans and challenges.
