Your Brain Soaking in Sugar 🧠
Diabetes isn't just about glucose — your brain is listening too. In a landmark study that followed 6,370 older adults, diabetes almost doubled the risk of dementia, and of Alzheimer's disease specifically (about 1.9 times). A systematic review of 14 long-term population studies found the same pattern — higher rates of dementia among people with diabetes, including both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.

Why would sugar affect memory? In plain words: years of high glucose can wear down the tiny vessels that feed the brain, and researchers believe changes in glucose, insulin, and amyloid metabolism are part of the picture too. The exact mechanisms are still being worked out — but the link is real.

Here's the part you control: the habits that protect your eyes, kidneys, and heart — steadier glucose, regular movement, good sleep, Mediterranean-style eating — are the same habits brain-health experts recommend. One plan. Every organ.

As World Alzheimer's Day approaches (21 September), know the warning signs: memory loss that disrupts daily life, confusion with time or place, and difficulty completing familiar tasks.
These are warning signs, not a diagnosis. If you notice any of them, please see a doctor as soon as you can — and don't dismiss them as normal aging.

Low Blood Sugar? Treat It in 15 Minutes💡
Low blood sugar can happen fast — and when it does, the last thing you need is guesswork. The internationally recognized alert level is below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L).

If you feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, or suddenly "irritable," check your number and act — don't wait it out.

Follow the Rule of 15: eat or drink 15 grams of fast-acting carbs, wait 15 minutes, then recheck. Still below 70? Treat again. That's it — no guessing, no panic eating.
Fast options (each ≈ 15 g of fast carbs):
• 4 glucose tablets
• 4 oz (120 mL) of juice or regular soda
• 1 tube of glucose gel

Skip the chocolate, cookies, and ice cream for now —they're high in fat, which slows how fast the sugar gets into your blood, and when you're low you need glucose fast. Once your reading is back in range, if your next meal is more than an hour away, have a small snack with carbs plus a little protein (like crackers with cheese) to keep you steady.

If someone is confused, unable to swallow, or unresponsive, do not give them any food or drink. Call emergency services right away.

Stress can also elevate your blood glucose 🔍

Ever looked at your CGM after a stressful day and wondered why your glucose line went up — when you didn't eat much? That's stress, and it's a real biological response: when your body triggers the fight-or-flight response, it releases adrenaline and cortisol, and your liverstored glucose (from glycogen) into the blood as emergency fuel.

For most healthy people, that extra sugar gets handled quickly. But with insulin resistance or diabetes, there isn't enough working insulin action to move it — so readings climb. Review in Diabetes Care identified stress as a potential contributor to chronic high blood sugar, with the most consistent evidence in type 2 diabetes.

The long game matters too: a review of long-term studies linked ongoing activation of the stress response to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes — connected to work stress, traumatic events, and depression.

What actually helps: a 10-minute walk (it helps lower stress hormones and help your body use up blood glucose at the same time), slow, deep breathing, protecting your sleep, and simply noticing the pattern. Next time your line jumps with no food involved, ask "what just happened?" — not "what's wrong with me?" Then take the walk. 🏃
