During my early years in Xiamen, most pregnant expatriates chose to return to their home countries or travel to Hong Kong for prenatal care and delivery. This was largely due to concerns about and a general lack of confidence in the quality of local obstetric services. At that time, prenatal care often amounted to little more than confirming the pregnancy and estimating the due date. In some cases, rather than supporting a healthy pregnancy, women received inappropriate traditional dietary advice, unnecessary prescriptions, and insufficient guidance on recognizing and reporting potential warning signs.
Interestingly, in recent years, Xiamen’s obstetric care has improved dramatically. Both the quality of medical services and the facilities themselves now stand on par with international standards. As a result, the number of foreign women choosing to give birth in Xiamen has grown significantly. The local maternal health system has evolved impressively, and trust in its care continues to rise.
