The ultimate guide to combining tax-free dollars with Colombia’s 50–70% lower dental costs for maximum savings on implants, crowns, and full-mouth restorations.

If you’re facing a $20,000+ quote for dental implants in the United States, you've likely started researching international options. By traveling to top medical hubs in Colombia, patients routinely save between 50% to 70% on world-class dental care.
But for Americans with a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), one critical question always comes up: Can I use my tax-free HSA dollars to pay for dental care in another country?

The short answer is: Yes.

The IRS permits the use of HSA and FSA funds for eligible medical and dental expenses—regardless of where in the world the treatment takes place.

Here is everything you need to know about legally maximizing your HSA to pay for your new smile in Colombia. 👇

How to pick the right veneer shade (without getting fake "chiclet" teeth)

The single biggest fear people have when getting veneers is ending up with bright, opaque, "toilet bowl" white teeth. Choosing the right shade is a mix of science and aesthetics, but a lot of people just ask for the brightest option on the chart without realizing how it will look in real life.

If you are picking shades for a smile makeover, here are four rules to get a natural look:

The Eye-White Rule:

A classic aesthetic benchmark is to match the brightness of your veneers to the whites of your eyes (sclera). If your teeth are significantly brighter than your eyes, they instantly look artificial and draw weird visual contrast.

Understanding Shade Codes (BL vs. Vita):

Natural teeth fall on the Vita scale (A1 is the brightest natural shade, B1 is slightly warmer). "Bleach shades" (BL1 through BL4) go beyond natural teeth. BL1 is stark, paper-white. If you want a bright "Hollywood" look that still looks like real teeth, BL3 or BL4 with gradient shading usually looks significantly better than flat BL1.

Translucency > Opacity:

Real enamel isn't a solid block of color; it's semi-translucent, especially at the biting edges (incisal edge). Cheap, monolithic veneers look fake because light bounces right off them. Insist on layered porcelain with edge translucency so light passes through naturally.

Test Shades in Natural Light: Dental office lighting uses harsh overhead LEDs that alter how colors look. Always ask to look at the shade tab tabs next to your face in natural daylight before approving the final ceramic order.

I put together a full guide breaking down shade chart comparisons, BL1 vs. B1 side-by-sides, and how skin undertones affect veneer color here:

Turkey vs. USA vs. Colombia for Veneers: How One Patient Chose After Reading 100+ Reviews

Most dental tourists don’t actually choose a country based on price alone. They choose a feeling of safety—and then use the price to justify it.

When you spend weeks scrolling through hundreds of clinic reviews, all those "Hollywood Smile" all-inclusive packages in Turkey and Colombia start blending together. Eventually, a much sharper question emerges: Who is actually accountable if something goes wrong 5,000 miles from home?

Same smile, three price tags ($4K vs. $22K+), and three completely different levels of accountability.
