Maintaining oral hygiene by brushing teeth at night may have significant cardiovascular benefits. A recent observational study tracked 1,800 adults aged 30 to 65 over a 10-year period to examine the relationship between dental care routines and heart health. Participants reported their oral hygiene habits, including brushing frequency and timing, and underwent regular cardiovascular assessments.
Results indicated that individuals who brushed their teeth before bed consistently had a 25% lower risk of developing heart disease compared to those who did not. Regular nighttime brushing was associated with reduced levels of systemic inflammation and lower markers of bacterial infection in the bloodstream, suggesting a potential link between oral bacteria management and cardiovascular health. Participants also demonstrated lower rates of plaque accumulation and gum disease, which are known contributors to heart-related conditions.
Researchers concluded that brushing teeth at night may play an important role in reducing the risk of heart disease by controlling harmful oral bacteria and systemic inflammation. Limitations include reliance on self-reported habits and observational design. Further longitudinal and interventional studies are recommended to confirm the causal relationship and explore optimal oral hygiene practices for cardiovascular protection.
