Your body is not betraying you.

A symptom is information. A signal. A piece of intelligence about where the system has fallen out of balance.

In the conventional model, we are taught to silence symptoms. Take this for the headache. Take that for the heaviness. Take this for the fog.

The other model is older and quieter. It asks: what is the body saying? Why is it saying it now? And what does it need in order to stop having to say it?

Hormones drift. Nutrients deplete. The nervous system runs too hot for too long. The gut microbiome thins. And the body, with all the intelligence it carries, begins to speak louder so we will hear.

The work is not to silence the speaking. It is to listen, and then to give the body what it has actually been asking for.

Depression is not a Prozac deficiency.

When the mind feels heavy, when the body feels grey, when joy feels far — none of this is character. The body is asking for something, and the asking is precise.
Before another prescription, there are four things worth checking.

Thyroid. Not by TSH alone — TSH is one of the most misread numbers in conventional medicine. The body actually runs on Free T3, and it needs to sit at the upper end of the range, not somewhere in the middle. Normal is not optimal.

Estrogen. Almost no one is taught how much estrogen has to do with mood. When it falls out of an optimal range, the experience that follows is often called depression. The chemistry tells a different story.
Magnesium — the right form. Most magnesium does not cross the blood-brain barrier. The lipid-soluble form does. This is the form that reaches the nervous system where mood is actually regulated.

Activated B-vitamins. Methylated, in therapeutic doses. The kind I formulated into Essentials 5in1 because I could not find a multivitamin on the market that was not full of fillers and inactive forms.

If you are on an antidepressant, please continue every therapy your doctor has you on. Also look at your hormones, your nutrients, and the microbiome of your gut. The body that has been called depressed for years often softens when the chemistry is finally read against the right ruler.

In thirty years of medicine, the pattern I have seen most often is not disease. It is the long, quiet stretch of years before disease — when the labs come back “normal” and the body has been whispering the whole time.

I once thought rest was the reward for finishing the work.
Then a coma, a year in bed, and three doctors who couldn’t help me taught me something my medical training never had.

Rest isn’t what you do after the body breaks. Rest is what keeps the body from breaking.

Every patient I’ve seen since — and there have been thousands — has the same story underneath the symptoms. Years of being on. Years of saying yes. Years of skipping the small repairs the body needed and won’t stop asking for until you start listening.
