🐬 What are some of the ways dolphins learn?

🎯Trainers work to shape new behaviors beginning with a target. By moving the target and bridging (whistling) the moment the dolphin touches it, trainers can pinpoint and reinforce critical points in a behavior. The target pole acts as an extension of the trainer’s arm, helping shape behaviors farther from the dock. It also helps indicate location or position, allowing a dolphin to learn where to move or touch.

👀Visual and movement-based behaviors can also be learned through peer observation, imitation, and social exposure.

🌊The CDTC lagoons are naturally ocean-fed, so it's a habitat where diverse prey, including fish, crustaceans, and octopuses, can thrive. The other day, Nubia caught an octopus! 🐙

🧠This kind of foraging provides natural enrichment, encouraging searching, chasing, manipulation, and problem-solving while supporting the their instinctive hunting behaviors.

You are not alone. 💙

A message that deeply resonates with all of us at CDTC.

CDTC Co-Founder, Kiki Kuhnert, had the privilege of attending YES!CON 2026 in Berlin, where more than 3,000 people affected by cancer, families, physicians, researchers, NGOs, and advocates came together for two powerful days of connection, exchange, and inspiration.

Just like CDTC, YesWecan!cer and YES!CON share a common belief: every person matters. It is about creating opportunities, seeing the individual beyond the diagnosis, listening to their story, empowering patients, and their families.

The true strength of YES!CON was found in the meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and the courage of people coming together. It was a powerful reminder that passion, compassion, collaboration, and genuine human connection can make a lasting difference.

Together, we create spaces of hope, support, and possibility. 💙

Therapy Thursday

Communication is more than words—it's connection. 💙
That's why Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is so important. AAC provides individuals with a way to express their thoughts, wants, needs, and feelings when spoken language alone isn't enough.

One of the biggest misconceptions about AAC is that it replaces speech. In reality, research shows the opposite: AAC can support speech and language development, reduce frustration, and help individuals communicate more confidently in everyday life—at home, at school, and in their communities.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to be heard, understood, and included.
💙 AAC doesn't replace a voice—it helps every voice be heard.

🐬Often you'll see the CDTC dolphins jump out of the water. Ever wonder why?

They do it for more than just fun or as a trained behavior. Jumping is a way for dolphins to communicate, play, keep their muscles strong, and, in the wild, get a better view to spot prey, predators, or other dolphins.

Pretty amazing what a simple jump can do! 😆
