⚖️💪 WHEN YOU LOSE WEIGHT, WHAT ARE YOU ACTUALLY LOSING?
We tend to celebrate weight loss with one number:
The number on the scale.
But losing 10 kg of mostly body fat is very different from losing 10 kg that includes a significant amount of muscle.
And new research gives us another reason to pay attention to that difference.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis looked at people who lost at least 10% of their body weight through lifestyle interventions, incretin-based medications such as GLP-1 drugs, or bariatric surgery.
The researchers found an important difference in how much fat-free mass was lost along the way.
In interventions combining diet AND exercise, only about 8% of the total weight lost was fat-free mass.
With diet alone, it was around 22%.
And in the studies involving incretin-based medication or bariatric surgery, roughly one third of the weight lost was fat-free mass.
⚠️ This does NOT mean that GLP-1 medication “eats your muscles.”
The studies and people involved were different, so we can't simply compare these percentages as if everyone had followed the same program.
But it does highlight something we think is incredibly important:
Weight loss should never only be about becoming lighter.
Muscle matters.
It helps us remain strong and independent.
It supports our metabolism and glucose regulation.
It allows us to move, work, play and participate in life.
And it becomes increasingly valuable as we get older.
So whether weight loss happens through lifestyle change, medication, surgery — or a combination — we should be asking:
How are we protecting muscle while losing fat?
That means thinking about adequate nutrition and protein, recovery and, importantly:
💪 Resistance training.
The goal isn't simply:
⬇️ Lose weight.
It's:
⬇️ Lose excess fat.
💪 Preserve muscle.
❤️ Protect long-term health.
Because the best result isn't just a smaller body.
It's a lighter body that remains strong.
