📢 Major step forward for cardiovascular prevention in Europe
FH Europe Foundation welcomes the publication of two landmark European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) consensus statements, presented at and released simultaneously.

🔬 The papers focus on:
* Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) in children and adolescents
* Lipid clinics worldwide – harmonisation, organisation, and funding

Together, they reinforce a critical message: cardiovascular prevention must take a life-course approach — from early detection in childhood to equitable access to specialised care.

✅ Key priorities from the updated paediatric FH consensus:
* Expand paediatric screening programmes
* Enable earlier diagnosis and treatment
* Adopt lower LDL-C treatment targets
* Improve transition from paediatric to adult care
* Reduce cumulative LDL-C exposure from early life

🌍 The global lipid clinic consensus (500+ clinics, 55 countries) highlights the need to:
* Strengthen and harmonise lipid clinic networks
* Improve access to specialised care
* Support national registries
* Ensure sustainable funding models

💙 We are especially proud that the patient voice and lived experience were embedded throughout both initiatives, with contributions from the FH Europe Foundation community.

These publications come at a pivotal time, as Europe advances efforts in early prevention, cardiovascular health checks, and the implementation of the EU Safe Hearts Plan.

Today marks a historic moment for cardiovascular health in Europe.

The European Commission has published the first-ever EU Cardiovascular Health Plan–the Safe Hearts Plan, setting out a bold and long-awaited roadmap to tackle Europe’s leading cause of death.

FH Europe Foundation warmly welcomes this landmark initiative. The Safe Hearts Plan recognises that early detection, prevention and personalised approaches are essential to reducing cardiovascular disease—and it explicitly acknowledges inherited cardiovascular risk factors, including familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and elevated lipoprotein(a). Importantly, the Plan also references EU-funded initiatives such as FH and -EARLY, underlining the value of evidence-based, life-course prevention.

Key elements that matter for families affected by inherited lipid disorders:
🫀 A strong focus on prevention and early detection
🧬 Recognition of genetic and lifelong cardiovascular risk
📊 A commitment to EU-wide cardiovascular health checks
🗺️ A call for national cardiovascular health plans in every Member State by 2027
⚖️ Concrete action to reduce inequalities and reach underserved populations

This Plan creates a unique opportunity to move from late diagnosis and crisis care to preventing avoidable heart attacks and strokes—decades earlier.

Now comes the most important phase: implementation.
The Safe Hearts Plan will only succeed if Member States translate it into ambitious national action, co-created with clinicians, scientists and people with lived experience.

FH Europe Foundation stands ready to work hand in hand with its Network Members and Ambassadors, while collaborating with EU institutions, national authorities and partners, to ensure that early detection of inherited lipid disorders becomes a cornerstone of cardiovascular prevention across Europe.

Today’s announcement also forms part of a broader EU health package aimed at making Europe’s health sector more innovative, competitive and resilient, including a Biotech Act and revised rules for medical devices.

Our post-doctoral researcher Dr Galatia Photiou participated to the conference in Valencia, Spain presenting the association between neighnorhood disadvantage and arterial stiffness: findings from the DEpICT study in Cyprus which was suggested to be submitted to the Artery Reseach Journal.

Moreover she attended to the training school organised receiving a hands-on training using various medical devices to measure blood pressure, arterial stiffness and other vascular parameters.

A big thank you to the Artery committee for organising this year's conference.
