One of the biggest myths in recovery is 'if it hurts more, it must be working'. For surgical rehab this approach is mostly outdated and often counterproductive. Some discomfort with physical therapy after surgery is common, but severe or escalating pain is not something you just 'push through'.
Expected rehab discomfort may include -
•Tightness, stretching, muscle fatigue
•Mild-to-moderate soreness afterwards
•Temporary increase in stiffness/swelling
•Discomfort that settles within hours to a day
Concerning pain may include -
•Sharp, stabbing or popping sensations
•Pain that keeps worsening during the session
•Significant swelling, warmth or redness
•Pain that doesn't improve with rest or ice
•Loss of function, numbness or weakness
A good therapist watches for pain intensity, swelling, range of motion afterwards and whether symptoms calm down within around 24 hours. If rehab leaves you feeling worse for days, a good therapist would consider this a sign to modify the programme, not push harder.
