„People with diabetes, whose attitude and joy of life impress us.”

"When I travel, I feel alive and free"

Moves his boundaries: Jan C. Kannengießer, 34, Type-1

Abroad, Jan C. Kannengießer regained his freedom; especially the freedom in his mind. "That was the biggest limitation for me: I can never let go of the diabetes," says the 34-year-old, who was diagnosed Type-1 at the beginning of his studies in economics. Diagnosed at a time, when life was just about to start. After the first shock, the rebel in Kannengießer quickly gained the upper hand. "I began to experiment and tried moving my boundaries, little by little," says the Bremer. One week away from civilization by kayak, snowkiting in Canada, staying overnight in an igloo in Norway "simply" a year of backpacking through the world – today he knows that everything is possible. "The traveling and the sports have given me back my confidence." He shares his unique and manifold experiences as a coach (further Information can be found under www.aktivmitdiabetes.de). "Many diabetics are afraid to explore themselves and what they believe to be extremes." Jan Kannengießer wants to take away this fear. "Life is so full of adventures. No one should miss these because of diabetes.”

First of all still Happy New Year to you all and that all your wishes and good intentions might become reality!! Happy to having survived the culinary madness of X-Mas and New Year as well as this journey :). Though I must admit I love it, but it is heaps to do and to catch up around that time of year, meaning little time for reflection.

It is therefore now time to round up my trip Down South to the end of the American continent :). Hope you enjoyed following my trip a little. Thanks to Marjolein for keeping you updated!!

The trip as well as the last leg was an adventure yes!! 2 months flat share on 16 squaremeter with 8 people, on a rocky floating underlayer with wet wardrobes, combined with little sleep and sometimes scarce food, facing technical issues constantly strips you of any kind of mask that you might be able to keep up in normal life. Luckily I had my “secret” Diabetes storage packed with sweets to overcome these food scarceness situations, not always easy but it worked out:). Being 14 days at sea without any wind or distraction asks patience and self discipline to keep up the good spirits and good atmosphere amongst the crew. After a few days without any sight of land, other vessels or even whale you feel isolated, even bored at a given moment. Like drifting on a wet desert that was new for me!! But we managed despite all odds ;) and enjoyed the sunsets, the accompanying playful dolphins waving hello periodically, as well as the constantly soundlessly present albatross and petrels showing off their marvelous gliding/flying abilities, sprinkled with a glimpse of a whale and sea lions here and there. And we laughed and had a good time!

After we rounded Cap San Diego windlessly but still 6 knots of current!! We made our way into the Beagle Channel and furtheron towards Ushuaia which is just a few miles further up. Ushuaia being a city made and its only right to exist is for travelers/expeidition tourists who wanna see Antarctica. This place exploding in numbers over the last years and the one and only pier constantly and fully occupied by 4-6 cruise vessels at a time. It is a weird mixture of St. Anton, Aspen and Kathmandu lined with the irregular fall wind gusts. Which means its either galling with 30-40 knots pushing all vessels on the side by 10 degrees in the harbour or it is absolutely calm, which alternates daily several times... :)

It was an exciting trip and an good experience. It was strenuous, mentally and physically demanding, a test for self-discipline, social empathy and capability and most importantly good fun!! :)
Hope you enjoy some of the pics and videos attached!!
