Meet 15-year-old Swarnali, who lives in a village in Dowarabazar Upazila in northern Bangladesh. She comes from a family with irregular income, where access to basic hygiene products is not guaranteed. Swarnali struggled to manage menstrual hygiene and used cloth due to lack of access to sanitary materials, which often made her feel uncomfortable, especially at school. Moreover, without proper hygiene, it can increase the risk of infections.

That is why 600 adolescent girls received dignity kits with essential menstrual hygiene items. Today, Swarnali can manage her period with greater comfort and confidence, including at school.

“Now I feel more comfortable and less worried when I’m at school,” says Swarnali.

We’re grateful for our local humanitarian partners, including ERA-Efforts for Rural Advancement for helping to create a . 👏

More than three years into the war, the humanitarian crisis in remains catastrophic. More 30 million people depend on humanitarian aid, while large parts of the healthcare system have collapsed and many medical professionals have been killed or forced to flee.

From June 1–4, an eight-member Malteser International emergency response team, supported by an infection prevention expert from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), will deploy to Port Sudan. Together, they will train nurses, doctors, and water and sanitation specialists in life-saving procedures.

“The situation in healthcare facilities is alarming. With a shortage of qualified staff, many hospital wards rely on undertrained personnel. Our focus is to ensure life-saving care can continue under these conditions,” says Edo Lihic, Head of Operations for our Sudan emergency response.

The mission is carried out in close coordination with the Sudanese Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO). We have already conducted a similar training mission in Port Sudan in December last year. The mission is funded by Aktion Deutschland Hilft.

Ebola update: Here’s what the situation looks like ℹ️

The Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda continues to evolve. According to WHO, as of 24 May, more than 900 suspected Ebola cases and more than 220 suspected deaths have been reported. In Uganda, there are eight confirmed cases and 2 confirmed deaths.

Our team in DR Congo is responding with urgency and care, drawing on years of experience in tackling Ebola and other infectious diseases.

💬 We work closely with communities to raise awareness. Using the People First Impact Method (P-FIM), we listen to communities to better understand their living conditions, build trust, and encourage adherence to prevention measures. Other efforts include radio programs, door-to-door sensitization, and the distribution of information materials.

🏥 At the same time, we are strengthening health facilities with protective equipment, testing materials, isolation and treatment units, surveillance, contingency planning, and improved water, sanitation, and hygiene measures.

Donations are urgently needed. Your support counts: https://malt-int.org/48xo 🙏

These measures are possible thanks to the support of European Commission and Auswärtiges Amt.

Together for a ! Happy Menstrual Hygiene Day! 🩸🌍

Menstruation is a part of life for 2.1 billion adolescent girls and women worldwide.

⚠️ Yet more than 500 million lack the resources, facilities, and support they need to manage their periods safely and with dignity. More than 170 million do not have access to a toilet. And 378 million women and girls in low- and middle-income countries rely on old cloths, tissue paper, or other unhygienic materials during their periods. Stigma around menstruation remains widespread.

💪 But change is possible. By breaking the stigma and improving access to period products, safe water, sanitation, and period-friendly toilets, we can help ensure that no one is put at risk or held back because they menstruate. In our projects and in crisis settings, this is exactly what we are working towards.

Imagine working for years without a real break – under the constant threat of attacks, with little sleep, and while carrying your own experiences of loss and displacement. For many mental health professionals in , this is daily reality. Still, they work tirelessly to support others. 🫂

“The quality of care depends on the wellbeing of those providing it,” says Dmytro Nersisian, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Manager at Malteser International in Ukraine.

That’s why we strengthen not only mental health services, but also the people behind them. Together with our local partner organizations, we support professionals through supervision, burnout prevention, manageable workloads, and peer exchange.

Supporting mental health professionals is not optional – it is essential.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Freedom can look different in every place. A safe birth. Access to healthcare. A community that is able to recover and rebuild. Across our work, we encounter it in many forms, from small steps forward to long journeys toward stability and dignity. 🌍

Pentecost reminds us that the Spirit is present wherever life is protected, empowered and sustained.

Wishing all our friends and followers a blessed and hope-filled Pentecost. 🕊️

Ebola continues to spread in DR Congo – This is our response🚨

According to WHO, around 600 suspected cases and 139 deaths have already been reported. And numbers are expected to rise as earlier transmission went undetected. In Ituri province, our teams are responding with urgency, working hand in hand with communities and local health authorities to contain the outbreak and protect lives.

Our response includes:

🔹 Raising awareness in communities on how Ebola spreads and how people can stay safe
🔹 Strengthening surveillance and supporting contact tracing
🔹Supporting health facilities with infection prevention & control measures (protective equipment like masks, gloves and gowns, hygiene protocols and contingency planning)
🔹 Expanding testing capacities for faster diagnosis
🔹 Building emergency stockpiles for rapid response
🔹Constructing infectious disease treatment centres
🔹Improving access to safe water in health facilities and communities

Our thoughts are with the affected communities and our teams on the ground. 🙏

Every contribution matters to help contain the outbreak. Donate now: https://malt-int.org/07uq ❤️

On today’s World Bee Day, meet Adrole Eshcol Ajua: one of the most experienced beekeepers in his community in northern . 🐝

After 20 years in a textile factory, Adrole made a bold change in 1999. He moved across Uganda and started over with just three beehives. As his bees settled, he harvested honey, reinvested, and expanded – step by step building his own farm. He later trained as a beekeeper, and in 2015 his apiary was named the best in West Nile. 🏆

Today, Adrole’s impact goes far beyond his own farm. As chairperson of a network of around 500 farmers, he trains others, supports collective honey marketing, and uses his own farm as a living classroom for the community. 💪

From early 2025 to April 2026, Malteser International and our partner Victim Relief Alliance, with support from the DuMont Foundation, provided training, equipment, and market access to Adrole and other farmers. Each participant also received hives, smokers, and protective equipment. In total, 50 farmers completed beekeeping training through this program.

“They linked us to outsiders and brought the market nearer,” Adrole says. The numbers are also moving in the right direction: he currently harvests between 500 and 700 kilograms of honey a year. 🍯

From three hives to a thriving community, this is what sustainable livelihoods can look like – and we are proud to have been part of it. Read the full article on our website 👉 https://malt-int.org/bt2b
