European Association for the Study of Diabetes Promoting excellence in diabetes care since 1965. The European Association for the Study of Diabetes e.V.
(1)

(EASD) is a membership-based academic non-profit organization. It was founded in 1965 and its headquarters is based in Duesseldorf, Germany. EASD is a networks for diabetologists with active members from all over the world. Membership is open to scientists, physicians, students, postdocs and fellows, allied health professionals and nurses who are interested in the field of diabetes or related diseases. The EASD Annual Meeting is one of the largest diabetes conferences in the world, attracting thousands of delegates each year. The scientific programme includes hundreds of talks, presentations and discussions on the latest results from basic and clinical diabetes research. EASD is also a leading player in postgraduate education having trained thousands of healthcare professionals through dedicated training courses and online education activities. Our award winning e-Learning platform, offers free access to courses developed with world-class experts in diabetes research and care. The Association is actively involved in producing and endorsing statements and guidelines translating the latest results from diabetes research into best practices in diabetes management. These statements and guidelines have proven to have significant visibility and substantial impact on health care, particularly when concerning statements on treatment and diagnostic criteria. By creating the Early Career Academy, EASD has increased its commitment to support, train, mentor, and create opportunities for scientists, clinicians, and students who are at an early or intermediate stage of their career. The European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD) was founded by EASD in 2000 to stimulate diabetes research in Europe. EFSD offers support in all areas of diabetes research through a wide range of joint and stand-alone initiatives. Funding streams are available throughout the year and since inception, EFSD has committed over €120 million to diabetes research in Europe. EASD is also the publisher of Diabetologia, a major monthly international diabetes journal with an impact factor of 8.2 (2022). The journal publishes original clinical, translational and experimental research on all aspects of diabetes and related subjects. For more information about EASD, please visit: www.easd.org

🧠 Meet Dr pierre-damien Denechaud ( & Institut des Maladies Métaboliques et Cardiovasculaires), recipient of the & Boehringer Ingelheim European Research Programme on "Multi-System Challenges in Diabetes".

His project, “ADISLET: Role of ADIpose tissue lipolysis on iSLETs in nutrient regulation and type 2 diabetes,” investigates how communication between adipose tissue and pancreatic islets influences insulin and glucagon secretion.

His team demonstrated that fatty acids released through adipose tissue lipolysis can stimulate insulin secretion by acting on pancreatic fatty acid receptors FFAR1 and FFAR4. The research also combined a specialised mouse model with an innovative two-organ-on-chip platform, providing new insights into the relationship between adipose tissue and pancreatic islets.

🗣️ "This programme has provided crucial support for our research, showing that fatty acids from adipocyte lipolysis stimulate insulin secretion. Furthermore, it has enabled us to initiate a collaboration with Matthieu Raoux (Université de Bordeaux) and obtain preliminary data to strengthen our future research." He reflects.

🎙️𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞: In this EASD TV conversation, Prof. Kei Sakamoto, recipient of the EASD- Novo Nordisk Foundation Diabetes Prize for Excellence, speaks with host Vivienne Parry about the molecular mechanisms linking exercise, glucose uptake and insulin signalling.

He explains how research into the LKB1 and AMPK pathways has deepened our understanding of how muscles take up glucose, including when insulin signalling is impaired. The conversation also explores the potential and limitations of targeting these pathways to develop new treatment approaches.

A reminder of why fundamental research matters: understanding how the body works today can help shape the diabetes treatments of tomorrow.

⭐️ Diabetes distress affects around 40 % of adults living with type 1 diabetes, yet emotional well-being is still rarely addressed systematically in routine care.

💬 A new rapid realist review first authored by Professor Ruth Harris recently published in the Metabologia Journal explores how structured assessment combined with meaningful conversation could help integrate diabetes distress into everyday consultations. Importantly, the assessment itself is only the starting point: “The value of the assessment lies not in generating a score, but in creating an opportunity for a person-centred conversation,” emphasises D-stress Study principial investigator Professor Jackie Sturt.

The authors, EASD members and Professors Jane Speight and Richard Holt amongst others, identify eight pathways through which this approach could support care – including uncovering concerns, normalising emotional responses and enabling more personalised, collaborative consultations.

🧠 Meet César Cunha (Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen), recipient of the EASD Albert Renold Travel Fellowship. His research explores the non-brain genomic mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease, including the impact of modifiable risk factors such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

🗣️ Reflecting on the fellowship, César shares:
"Being awarded the EASD Albert Renold Travel Fellowship Programme enabled me to perform part of my PhD at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where I acquired new expertise that propelled these projects to the next level. Being immersed in one of the top genomic research centers in the world, surrounded by interdisciplinarity, was invaluable for the success of our research projects."

🧠 💙 World Mental Health Day: recognising the mental health impact of living with diabetes.

This World Mental Health Day, under the theme “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,” we are highlighting the importance of listening to and addressing these experiences.

The first EASD guideline on diabetes distress provides recommendations for recognising, assessing and addressing diabetes distress. The guideline was developed together with people with lived experience of diabetes and rooted in real-world needs, because emotional health matters as much as physical health.

In this EASD TV conversation, Prof. Anette-Gabriele Ziegler ( Helmholtz Munich ), this year’s Claude Bernard Prize recipient, looks back on a career shaped by one question: could type 1 diabetes be detected, and eventually prevented, before it develops?

A fascinating conversation about more than three decades of research, the people behind it and the changing future of type 1 diabetes.
