In part 10 of Minds Behind Organ-on-Chip season 2, we continue our video interview series spotlighting researchers advancing MPS and organ-on-chip technologies.

This time, we visited Dr. Puja Pandey, PostDoc in the Büttner Group at Hannover Medical School in Germany. Puja introduced us to her work on establishing a system that mimics intestinal morphology and function to better understand epithelial regeneration after infection and treatment. In this video, she explains why she started using organ-on-chip technology and walks us through how she implemented it in her workflow.

In part 9 of Minds Behind Organ-on-Chip season 2, we continue our video interview series spotlighting researchers advancing MPS and organ-on-chip technologies.

This time, we introduce Simranpreet Kaur, a PhD student at the Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology - Hans Knöll Institute. At the EUROoCS Annual Meeting, she presented her work on establishing lung-on-chip models to study invasive lung infections, with a particular focus on invasive mucormycosis. Using this model, she investigates the interaction between mucoralean fungi and their host to better understand the mechanisms of invasion, as well as the defensive role of host alveolar macrophages in the immune response.

We took our team retreat outdoors!

Last week, we took a well-deserved break for fresh air, reflection, and team building. We stepped away from the lab and spent time together in nature.

With the support of our wonderful coach, Toralf Seidemann, we explored a slackline course that we could only complete by working together. We also cooked over an open fire, tried archery, and made energy balls.

The retreat reminded us how much stronger our work becomes when we communicate clearly, trust one another, and tackle challenges together.

Reenergized by the experience, the team is now back in Jena and focused on bringing more organ models into science.

At EUROoCS Annual Meeting, we met Sara Matos, PhD student at the Bacterial Energy Metabolism Lab at NOVA in Portugal. Sara talked about her work on establishing a gut-on-chip model to study the factors that drive the transition of the gut pathobiont Bilophila wadsworthia from commensal to pathogen.

In part 7 of Minds Behind Organ-on-Chip season 2, we continue our video interview series spotlighting researchers advancing MPS and organ-on-chip technologies.

This time, we met Alexandra Oliveira, PhD student at NOVA Medical School in Lisbon, Portugal. Alexandra introduced us to her work on developing a drug delivery system for post-surgical treatment of glaucoma patients. By integrating the drug delivery system in a microfluidic chip and mimicking the physiological aqueous humor flow in the eye, she is evaluating drug release and its effect on human Tenon’s fibroblasts under flow.
