In our continued efforts to support the iGEM Competition this year, we visited the team at Sheffield University to set up and train them up on the loan VANTAstar microplate reader they will be using for fluorescence and luminescence assays.
This team are working on Project DravEx to engineer exosomes so that they can cross the blood-brain barrier to deliver therapeutic antisense oligonucleotides to neurons. They are targeting mutations in the SCN1A gene, which causes a severe epileptic condition called Dravet syndrome.

BMG LABTECH UK are thrilled to be supporting iGEM teams again this year. iGEM is the world's biggest synthetic biology competition, where teams work on projects to tackle everyday issues facing the world by building genetically engineered systems.

Last week we visited reGelerate at Imperial College London to set up and provide training on their loan VANTAstar microplate reader. The team are working to generate an ordered, self-repairing hydrogel using non-pathogenic fungal prions which could be used in bioremediation and biofuel production.
We wish all the teams the best of luck with their projects this summer!

A quick recap of the Iberian Prion Meeting 2026 in Spain 😃

Together with our distribution partner Biogen Científica, we were on site – as the only commercial exhibitor in the middle of an international exchange with around 60 scientists from all over the world.

A real highlight was the presentation by our colleague Ralf Ernsberger, which drew a lot of interest on the second day and brought many visitors to our booth.

It was great to see so many familiar faces again – and the conversations once more highlighted how important these specialized events are for staying connected within the community. 👩‍🔬👨‍🔬

Many thanks to Biogen Científica for the great collaboration – and a warm welcome to Sara Huin, who supported us on site for the first time! 🎉
