Every pose is a question.

The shape is only the beginning.
A posture does not end when the body arrives.

In Tadasana, a small lift of the kneecaps can change the whole leg.
In Warrior II, the breath may show whether effort has become strain.

With props, the body may reveal where it has been compensating.
In supported restoration, stillness may show what movement usually hides.

Each pose gives feedback.
Each adjustment gives information.
Each breath becomes part of the learning.

The body does not speak loudly.
But when we stay attentive, it teaches.

A block.
A belt.
A bolster.

These are not accessories.
They are teachers.

B.K.S. Iyengar developed the systematic use of props over decades.

He understood that when a student cannot access the action of a pose, simply asking them to “try harder” does not create understanding.

It often creates strain.
Compensation.
Frustration.

But with the right prop, the same student may begin to experience what the pose is meant to teach:

The lift of the spine.
The opening of the chest.
The direction of the breath.
The steadiness of attention.

A belt can extend the reach when the hands cannot yet find the foot.
A block can bring the floor closer, so the spine does not collapse.
A bolster can support the chest and spine, so the nervous system can soften enough to learn.

This is the intelligence of props.
They are not used because the student has failed.
They are used because the body may not yet understand the action of the pose.

Once the body begins to understand, the support can gradually change.
The prop teaches.
The body learns.
The prop recedes.

💬 What prop has taught you the most?

At BKS Iyengar Yogashala, our studio is fully equipped with props because they are part of how Iyengar Yoga is taught — with precision, safety, and observation.

Join us in class and experience how props can change the way your body understands yoga.

The pose looks like rest.
That is why people underestimate it.

Viparita Karani — Legs-Up-the-Wall — is one of the simplest inversions to enter.

No balancing.
No pushing.
No performance.

You come close to the wall, lie down, and let the legs rise.
The wall supports the legs.
The floor supports the back.
The breath begins to soften.

But in Iyengar Yoga, Viparita Karani is not merely “resting with the legs up.”

It is a quiet introduction to the effect of inversion — when the body is supported enough for the eyes, throat, chest, breath, and mind to settle.

In the Senior Citizens Syllabus developed by Geetaji and used at RIMYI, inversions are taught gradually and systematically. Viparita Karani appears there in a supported form, with bent legs on a chair or box.

That tells us something important.
Inversion is not only for the strong, flexible, or advanced student.
Sometimes the most intelligent practice is not the one where you do more.
It is the one where the body stops struggling — and begins to receive.

For beginners:
Start simply. Legs up the wall. No bolster. Five minutes. Quiet breathing.

For experienced students:
Stay longer. Observe the eyes, throat, chest, breath, and mind.

The question is not:
“Am I doing enough?”

The question is:
“What changes when I stop doing so much?”

Practice under proper guidance, especially if you have medical concerns related to blood pressure, the neck, eyes, circulation, or recovery from illness or injury.

Have you practiced Viparita Karani before?

YOUR FEET SHAPE YOUR HIPS

If the arches collapse, the effects don't stop at the feet.

The knees lose support.
The hips lose stability.
The pelvis shifts out of balance.

A lifted inner arch creates an upward action through the entire leg, helping the pelvis stay organized and supported.

Sometimes improving a standing pose starts at the foot—not the hip.

The foundation influences everything above it.
