I came across an interesting discussion about whether music belongs in a yoga class or not. 🎶🧘🏽♀️
Original texts and practices of yoga, before westernization, would most often suggest “no”.
The work of quieting the mind, whether one is facing discomfort or ease in the moment, can be more easily and successfully achieved without the distraction of added external sounds/voices.
My feeling, and one I’ve seen others express, is that sometimes certain types of music, in certain settings, in certain moments, can support my efforts to tune inwards, to sense vibration, and even to feel more connected to my true self.
The latter sentiment is because music and singing has been an important part of my life since practically birth!
I was singing in my childhood, playing flute and classical guitar, participating in middle school choir. I even auditioned, got accepted, and attended a high school for performing and visual arts, for voice! 🤩
So, I’m curious your thoughts?
Do you feel that music supports or distracts you during a yoga class?
What type(s) of music supports your practice?
I also think it’s important to honor traditional yogic values and I usually silence any music during savasana/meditation.
At the same time, this topic has been inspiring my curiosity to explore music in some of my yoga classes/events/workshops.
Groovy, funky soul music has always been one genre that lights me up inside! ✨
So, I’m putting together a nice variety of calm/chill and upbeat/energizing tunes on the playlist for the 1st of a monthly partnership called “Yoga + Brunch” with Zoku Copenhagen, at their rooftop restaurant “The Living Kitchen”!
