Do your gums bleed when you brush or floss? 🦷

Occasional bleeding can happen, for example if the gums are irritated or you brush too hard. But gums that bleed repeatedly can be a sign of gingivitis or other gum problems - and shouldn’t simply be ignored.

Good daily oral hygiene and regular dental checks can help prevent gum disease from progressing.

If bleeding keeps happening - especially together with swollen or tender gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth or pus - book a dental check.

Antibiotics can save lives - but only when they’re used correctly. 💊

Common mistakes include:

- stopping early on your own
- using leftover antibiotics
- sharing antibiotics with others
- expecting antibiotics to work for colds or flu

Using antibiotics responsibly helps protect both your health and the effectiveness of antibiotics in the future.

Migraine is a debilitating disease accompanied by visual disturbances, nausea and strong headaches. That some people are affected by this illness has been known for centuries, with the first descriptions of migraine-like symptoms dating back as far as 500B.C. Because the underlying causes of the migraine are not well understood, most current treatments have been aimed at reducing the accompanying symptoms, particularly the headache. Recently however a new treatment has been approved significantly reducing the number of monthly migraine attacks in patients.

A new class of drugs is finally offering relief for some who frequently suffer these powerful headaches.

Antibiotic treatment is a mainstay in combating most bacterial infections. The choice of antibiotic to treat a given infection depends on both the site of infection and the type of bacteria causing the infection.
One important type of antibiotic are the fluoroquinolones. Fluoroquinolones usually have a name that ends with “-floxacin”, e.g. ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin and levofloxacin. These are important in the treatment of bacteria resistant to other commonly used antibiotics. In a small fraction of patients using fluoroquinolones severe adverse effects arise in the form of long-term impacts on muscle and tendon pain and sensory disturbances. This provides an additional argument for fluoroquinolones being retained after other viable alternatives have been tried. Therefore, if your general practitioner prescribes these as a first line of treatment of an infection, inquire about possible alternatives. This can help reduce the risk of experiencing adverse effects and that bacteria may develop resistance to antibiotics that should be kept for more serious situations.

Commonly prescribed drugs called fluoroquinolones cause rare, disabling side effects. Researchers are struggling to work out why.
