Bringing maritime innovation closer to the industry🌟

A strong idea is only the starting point. Bringing it into the maritime industry also requires an understanding of customer needs, production, market conditions, and collaboration across the value chain.

This was the focus when Orskov Yard recently hosted the opening day of the Maritime Stars 2026/2027 kick-off camp in Frederikshavn.

Maritime Stars is run in partnership with Erhvervshus Nord, Allan Hejslet and Danske Maritime (Danish Maritime), with support from Den Danske Maritime Fond. The program connects maritime startups with established companies, industry experts, and potential partners from across the Danish maritime industry.

Five selected startups – Nereus Dynamics, Stonereefs, NextMariner, CirQularBox®, and Viscendia – met with around 35 representatives from established maritime companies. Through intensive one-to-one meetings, they tested their ideas against industry experience, received practical input, and met potential advisory board partners for the seven-month accelerator program.

Orskov Yard has been an active Maritime Stars partner for several years. By sharing our experience in ship repair, customer collaboration, and supplier coordination, we can give startups a practical perspective on how their solutions work in a maritime environment and where an idea may need refinement 🌟

A shipyard is a natural setting for this exchange. Each project brings together different technical disciplines, companies, and solutions around a single vessel, making collaboration essential to daily operations.

Engaging with new companies also gives us insight into emerging technologies, alternative approaches to familiar challenges, and solutions we might not otherwise encounter.

Thank you to everyone who contributed in Frederikshavn. We look forward to following the five startups' progress as the program continues 🚀

Strengthening our team in our sales and project department 🤝

Two new colleagues have joined Orskov Yard: Kenneth Bille Weyhe, Sales Manager, and Jakob Plesner, Junior Project Manager. Both are trained marine engineers, but they join us at different stages of their careers and in two different roles.

For Kenneth, the appointment marks a return to Orskov Yard. Thirteen years ago, he began his maritime career here as a welder and pipefitter. He now returns with six years of experience at DESMI, where he focused on developing the company’s aftersales and service business.

Kenneth’s practical experience, technical expertise, and commercial insight provide a strong foundation for his new role at Orskov Yard. As Sales Manager, he will work closely with customers and partners to understand their requirements and support the planning of upcoming projects.

Jakob joins us at the beginning of his project management career. After graduating from Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering, he gained hands-on experience as a process operator before taking his first step into the maritime industry.

As Junior Project Manager, Jakob will work alongside our experienced project team and learn how we plan, coordinate, and deliver complex repair and maintenance projects. Over time, he will take on greater responsibility and manage projects more independently.

Welcome back to Orskov Yard, Kenneth – and welcome to the team, Jakob.

Some careers are best experienced up close 👀

Last week, we opened our shipyard to around 550 ninth- and tenth-grade students participating in Maritime Career Day 2026.

A shipyard can be difficult to understand from inside a classroom. It brings together a wide range of trades and technical disciplines, all working towards the same goal: keeping vessels safe, efficient, and operational.

During their visit, the students explored the yard, met our employees, and spoke with apprentices about their work and educational paths. These conversations are particularly valuable because they let students hear directly from young people who have recently made similar educational decisions.

Maritime Career Day is not about choosing a career in a single day. It’s about broadening the students’ view of what is possible and introducing them to workplaces and professions they may not otherwise encounter.

At Orskov Yard, we have seen that early encounters can leave a lasting impression. In fact, many of our apprenticeship applicants first visited the yard as ninth- or tenth-grade students during previous Maritime Career Days.

Thank you to Maritime Network Frederikshavn and everyone involved in giving young people across Frederikshavn a closer look at the career opportunities within the maritime industry.

A taste of Hawaii in Hamburg 🌴

This week at SMM Hamburg, we welcomed customers, partners, and industry colleagues to a Hawaii-inspired evening in a tropical setting.

The theme is a subtle nod to our hometown, Frederikshavn, home to Denmark’s only palm-lined beach.

Our location near Frederikshavn's city center brings together all practical aspects of a yard stay. The vessel, project team, specialist maritime companies, and support services are all part of a well-established maritime cluster, enabling direct communication, quick decisions, and efficient coordination.

Accommodation, restaurants, transport, and daily services are all close to the yard. After work, the coastline, natural surroundings, and Palm Beach offer spaces to unwind, knowing your vessel is in safe hands at Orskov Yard.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and brought a bit of Hawaiian spirit to Hamburg 🍹

SMM runs until Friday. Visit Orskov Yard at the Danish Pavilion, Hall B1, Ground Floor, to discuss your next repair, upgrade, or conversion project and discover what a yard stay in Frederikshavn can offer.

SMM presents the technologies. Orskov Yard makes them work onboard.

At SMM Hamburg, the maritime industry presents the technologies shaping the future of shipping. For the existing fleet, however, the maritime transition becomes tangible when yards install new equipment, modify technical systems, and prepare vessels for changing operational and regulatory requirements.

Ship repair yards therefore play a key role in implementing new technology onboard. At Orskov Yard, upgrade, retrofit and conversion projects often involve integrating new equipment into existing vessel systems, adapting structures and technical installations, or preparing vessels for new operating profiles.

Successful implementation depends not only on the individual solution, but also on detailed planning and close coordination across technical disciplines. Everything must work together, and the required modifications must be completed safely within the scheduled yard stay.

This practical implementation perspective is what Orskov Yard brings to SMM 2026.

From 1–4 September, more than 2,200 exhibitors from across the maritime value chain will gather in Hamburg to present new technologies, exchange knowledge, and discuss the industry’s ongoing transformation.

Meet Orskov Yard at the Danish Pavilion in Hall 1, EG Booth 101, to discuss your next repair, upgrade, or conversion project.

Offshore energy from a vessel maintenance perspective 🌊

Offshore energy depends on more than drilling rigs, production platforms, and subsea infrastructure. It also relies on a diverse fleet of specialized vessels that support work at sea.

Platform supply vessels, anchor handlers, service operation vessels, and offshore construction vessels perform very different assignments. They all require reliable propulsion systems, thrusters, cranes, hydraulics, electrical installations, and other operationally critical equipment.

This is the perspective Orskov Yard brings to this week.

Drawing on extensive experience with offshore vessels, we carry out repairs, maintenance, upgrades, and conversion projects across multiple technical disciplines.

The addition of our largest floating dock, Dock 5, in 2021 further expanded our capacity to accommodate larger offshore vessels and support a broader range of projects. Combined with our workshops and the specialist expertise available through Frederikshavn’s maritime network, this enables us to bring several technical disciplines together around the vessel.

From 24–27 August, Orskov Yard will join 19 other Danish companies at in Stavanger. Together, these companies represent expertise and solutions from across the energy value chain.

📍 Meet Orskov Yard in Hall 3, Stand 3350A–3350B, to discuss the vessels and technical requirements behind your offshore operations.

Planning your next fishing vessel yard stay starts this week in Trondheim 🐟

From 18–20 August, Orskov Yard joins customers, partners, and industry professionals at Nor-Fishing 2026.

Nor-Fishing is an ideal opportunity to discuss upcoming docking requirements and start planning early, ensuring complex projects become well-coordinated yard stays.

Visit us at the Pavilion of Denmark, where we are exhibiting alongside 37 other Danish companies, showcasing solutions for fisheries, fish processing, and maritime industries.

For fishing vessels, a yard stay often brings several activities together within one carefully scheduled window – from class surveys and planned maintenance to equipment overhauls, processing facility upgrades, and larger repair or conversion work. Early planning helps ensure that these activities can be coordinated efficiently and completed within the available docking period.

With decades of experience working with pelagic and factory trawlers, Orskov Yard manages repair, maintenance, and conversion projects across multiple technical disciplines. Our services include steelwork, piping, refrigeration, mechanical systems, electrical installations, hydraulics, surface treatment, and accommodation upgrades.

Throughout the project, a dedicated project manager serves as your single point of contact, coordinating yard teams, vessel crews, suppliers, and specialist partners from arrival to redelivery. Our goal is to optimize the yard stay and ensure your vessel returns to fishing operations on schedule.

Visit us at stand D-380 at Nor-Fishing to discuss your next yard stay.

Summer maintenance – on a slightly larger scale 🛠️

Summer is often the time to tackle those practical projects that have been waiting for the right opportunity.

At Orskov Yard, we used part of the summer period to carry out a major maintenance and upgrade project on Dock 2, our smallest floating dock.

As part of our preventive maintenance program, we replaced the dock’s ballast pumps to ensure continued operational reliability. Preventive maintenance is essential to our daily operations, as our equipment must perform when needed, just as we are committed to delivering every vessel on time.

Sections of the dock’s steel structure were also renewed and reinforced to maintain its strength and extend its service life.

In addition, the entire dock deck was grit blasted to Sa 2½ standard and given a new protective coating system. The deck was primed with Hempel Avantguard 750, a zinc-rich epoxy primer, followed by two additional epoxy coats. Dock walls and staircases were also surface-treated and protected with a full anticorrosive coating system, carried out by our long-standing partner, Premator.

With the work completed, Dock 2 is once again in top condition and ready for the busy docking schedule ahead 🗓️

Our ongoing investment in preventive maintenance and facilities helps us maintain the reliability, efficiency, and on-time performance our customers expect from Orskov Yard.

Optimal hull performance starts in dry dock 🚢

Reducing hull resistance directly lowers fuel consumption and emissions. Since 2018, MOLSLINJEN has applied Hempel A/S’s Hempaguard coating across its Express high-speed ferries. The coating is designed to limit fouling and maintain a smooth hull surface, helping vessels move through the water with less resistance.

Achieving optimal hull performance takes more than choosing the right coating. It also requires careful planning and close coordination during the yard stay. Application conditions, temperatures, and drying times must all be fully aligned with the vessel’s docking plan and the overall yard schedule.

At Orskov Yard, we work closely with the vessel crews, Hempel, and application specialists to ensure that each process runs smoothly and meets all requirements.

We’re pleased to see this teamwork highlighted in Hempel’s new film, which was recorded during a yard stay here in Frederikshavn.

🎥 Watch the film to hear Søren Roesdahl, Chief Engineer at Molslinjen, and Bent Boris Hansen, Superintendent at Bornholmslinjen, explain how Hempaguard has helped improve hull performance and why Molslinjen keeps adopting new generations of the coating as technology advances.
