BRAVO anerkendelse af ældgammel viden og frigørelse fra bedre viden 🤗

For decades the instruction was the same. If you are sick, wait for the white man's medicine. Import it. Pay for it in foreign currency. Trust it because it came from a laboratory in Europe. And if your grandmother's remedy worked, call it superstition. Call it witchcraft. Call it primitive.
Burkina Faso just said no.
The Ministry of Health formally approved more than 18 additional traditional medicines for national use. These are not random herbs pulled from the bush. They are derived from ancestral knowledge, validated through formal processes, and now recognized by the state as legitimate treatments for the Burkinabe people. This comes on top of 53 products already approved earlier this year by the National Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners.
Over 80 percent of the population already uses traditional pharmacopoeia. The difference now is that the government is treating that knowledge with the respect it deserves. Not as folklore. Not as something to be studied and stolen by foreign pharmaceutical companies. As medicine. As science. As part of a national health system.
This is what sovereignty looks like in practice. Not just soldiers marching and flags changing. A health system built on what the land already provides. Treatments that do not require begging the World Bank for import licenses. Medicines that do not drain the national treasury because they are priced in euros.
The West has spent generations telling Africa that its own knowledge is backward. They came with missionaries and merchants and called our healers witch doctors. Then they took our plants, patented them in European laboratories, and sold them back to us at prices we could not afford. The neem tree belongs to India now in patent law. The rooibos belongs to South Africa only because people fought for it. Artemisinin, derived from sweet wormwood used in Chinese medicine for centuries, became a Western pharmaceutical blockbuster.
Burkina Faso is refusing that cycle. They are saying the knowledge in the village is real. The remedies our ancestors refined over centuries are real. And a nation that cannot heal itself with its own resources is not fully sovereign.
This is not rejection of modern science. It is expansion of what science means. It is saying that African knowledge systems deserve a seat at the table, not just as raw material for foreign labs, but as full partners in national health.
The pharmaceutical industry will not celebrate this. The aid industry will not celebrate this. Because both depend on Africa remaining a consumer of products made elsewhere. A patient, not a producer.
Burkina Faso chose to be a producer.
