Thich Nhat Hanh 11.11. 1926 - 22.01. 2022.
- In loving memory and with deep gratitude for teaching us how to create a revolution of stillness:
SLOW MOTION MONK
I'm standing in the square in the French noon heat. The sun rests high above the monastery and the surrounding vineyards. There are people gathered from all over the world. Some sit on the grass, others wait in the meditation hall, and few go to and from the bookstore.
I'm stopped - something I'm practicing doing in this place. And then I see him walking, almost in slow motion. He is old, but moves imperceptibly gently across the grass in his brown robe and with the bamboo hat resting on his back. The head is completely bare, the face open, almost like a child.
I'm touched to see him walk, taste the salt water on my tongue and wipe my cheeks in the scarf. He walks in peace. His presence and calmness affect everyone in the square. People stop. I notice how compassion, joy, and a deep sense of cohesion have arisen simply by seeing this serene monk. Thich Nhat Hanh moves towards the meditation hall, places his clip clappers at the opening and disappears into the dark room.
In those moments on the way across the grass, he showed me that it is possible. That there is a way out of my suffering, of the suffering of every human being, and that the way is before me, on the grass under my feet. I wipe the tears off my cheeks and walk slowly towards the hall. In trust.
In the minutes on the square, under the scorching sun, I had unconditional confidence that love and peace are possible for all of us. And that experience came to form a strong starting point for my future work. I have subsequently thought about how a gentle monk's slow walk across a lawn can evoke such a strong sense of cohesion in a whole group of people.
The answer is simple, Thich Nhat Hanh was a powerful example of a man, who has walked all the way and who lived peace, love and compassion so strongly that he was a living Buddha. And a living Buddha changes the world and those he meets along the way.
