What happens when we listen to music?
Music is processed through functions in the brain related to cognition, emotion, pleasure, rhythm and movement.
Research also points to a connection between musical tempo and arousal: slower-paced music can support a calmer state, while faster rhythms can create a more activating atmosphere.
This is one of the reasons why sound deserves attention when designing environments for healthcare.
Because sound isn't simply something we hear – it's something we respond to.
