For students interested in healthcare:

What kind of provider do you want to become?

Not just what specialty.

Not just what degree.

What kind of presence do you want to bring into the room when a patient is scared, confused, frustrated, or in pain?

Global health has a way of asking deeper questions.

That is why we believe healthcare training should start long before medical school.

Comment with one word that describes the kind of healthcare leader you want to become.

This summer, we will be sharing behind-the-scenes moments from our Dominican Republic medical internship trips, remote research cohorts, student experiences, and global health training.

If you are a student interested in medicine, public health, research, or global health, follow along.

You will see what healthcare looks like outside the classroom and why future healthcare leaders need more than perfect grades.

Follow and share this with a student who should know about GHL.

One of the most important parts of our Dominican Republic program is that students learn from local Dominican doctors.

They see how care is delivered in the local context.

They learn how culture, resources, language, trust, and community relationships shape patient care.

They learn that culturally relevant healthcare does not happen by accident. It happens when care is led by people who understand the community.

That lesson matters everywhere, including in the United States.

Medical research is one of the best ways for students to build academic confidence before applying to competitive health programs.

Through our remote medical research internship, students learn how to:

• Understand medical literature
• Ask better research questions
• Interpret data
• Contribute to academic writing
• Understand the publication process
• Work with MD research advisors

These are skills students can carry into college, graduate school, medical school, and future healthcare careers.

Summer research cohorts are open.

Our students are gaining more than clinical experience. They are developing cultural humility, communication skills, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the social factors that influence health around the world.

Every patient interaction is a reminder that healthcare is about people first.

This is what global health looks like.

🌎 Dominican Republic❤️ Community health screenings🩺 Hands-on clinical experience📚 Learning beyond the classroom

The future of healthcare isn’t built in lecture halls alone. It’s built through service, connection, and experiences that challenge us to see the world differently.

Day 3 in the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴
Our students spent the day supporting community health screenings, including blood pressure and blood glucose checks, while learning what healthcare access looks like beyond the classroom.
This is hands-on global health experience for students pursuing medicine, public health, nursing, research, and other pre-health pathways.
Applications are open for future Global Health Leaders cohorts.

While some college students spent Memorial Day weekend recovering from parties, our students spent theirs serving communities in the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴❤️

These future healthcare leaders were out in rural neighborhoods providing blood pressure screenings, glucose checks, health education, and compassionate care alongside local healthcare professionals.

This is what leadership looks like.
This is what purpose looks like.
This is what happens when students choose growth over comfort.

Experiences like this don’t just build resumes. They build perspective, cultural humility, confidence, and the kind of healthcare professionals our world desperately needs.

Proud of every single one of these students.

If you are applying to college, medical school, PA school, nursing school, public health programs, or research opportunities, your experience matters.

But not all experience is the same.

Admissions teams want to see that you understand people, systems, service, leadership, and the real-world barriers patients face.

Our programs help students build that kind of understanding through medical research, public health training, and global clinical experience.

This summer, do something that changes the way you see healthcare.

Students do not just “observe” global health.

They practice real skills that translate into future careers in medicine, public health, research, and healthcare leadership.

During our Dominican Republic clinical internship, students may gain experience with:

• Blood pressure screening
• Glucose screening
• Patient education
• Community health outreach
• Cross-cultural communication
• Clinic flow and teamwork
• Global health ethics
• Working alongside local medical professionals

These are the kinds of experiences that help students understand healthcare far beyond a textbook.

At Global Health Leaders, our clinical programs are not built around foreign doctors “dropping in.”

They are built around local Dominican doctors, local staff, local community leaders, and students who are trained to serve with humility.

Our students learn that global health is not about being the expert in someone else’s community. It is about listening, learning, supporting, and working within systems that already exist.

That is the kind of healthcare leadership the world needs more of.
