💭 How do you know if a young person arriving in a country is under 18 or, in fact, an adult?

This is where age assessment comes in ☝️ It helps authorities to offer the support and protection a person needs. Getting this right is important, especially for children, who have important rights and safeguards.

Recently IOM organized two trainings for officials of the Police and Border Guard Board (Politsei- ja Piirivalveamet) on how to approach age assessment in practice and in line with evolving EU rules. The sessions, delivered by a good colleague from IOM Poland, focused on real-life cases, discussions and practical exercises, helping participants think through different situations they may face in their work.

At the regular network meeting organized by the European Migration Network National Contact Point in Estonia, IOM presented the results of the International Migration Review Forum, which was held in New York earlier this month, as well as our newly released World Migration Report 2026, which provides up-to-date evidence and thematic analysis on migration trends worldwide 💡

We were pleased to welcome a delegation from Slovakia to Estonia for a study visit focused on migration management 🇸🇰

Over several days in Tallinn, representatives from Slovak authorities engaged with the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board (Politsei- ja Piirivalveamet), exchanging ideas on digital solutions, asylum procedures, and inter-agency cooperation. The visit also offered an opportunity to explore Estonia’s approach to the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

These exchanges are key to strengthening cooperation and supporting countries in building practical, evidence-based approaches to migration governance 🤝

Yesterday, together with the Police and Border Guard Board (Politsei- ja Piirivalveamet), we hosted an information day for migration officers on voluntary returns and reintegration.

The activity supports migrants who cannot or do not wish to stay in Estonia to return to their home countries safely and with dignity. Strong cooperation is key - and we are grateful for the Police and Border Guard Board as a committed partner 🤝 Together, we walked through roles, processes and real-life cases, with participants raising many practical and thoughtful questions.

Events like this help ensure people receive the right information and support at the right time 🎯
