Urbacultura practices and promotes urban agriculture in Barcelona. We produce food (at the moment, micr
ogreens and wheatgrass), do research and share our experience with public in order to help build an ethical, sustainable, local and socially just food system. The world’s population is continually growing and the cities have become more and more densely populated, creating higher food demand especially in urban areas. Furthermore, large-scale food production and distribution has had a major impact on our environment, our resources are scarcer by day, we bring our food from miles away and often rely on unfair supply chains. This challenges our existing ways of growing and supplying food to people, demanding an immediate alternative that helps us produce high quality food in a sustainable, local and fair way. Fortunately, a tangible solution is already here; it’s urban agriculture. Urban agriculture combines the technological and agricultural knowledge and is a great way to grow healthy, nutritious and local food sustainably. We can now produce much more food using significantly less space and resources, creating stronger local economies and greener cities. Urbacultura responds to the needs of the rapidly changing food landscape by practising and promoting urban agriculture in Barcelona. Specifically, we currently have three lines of work:
• We produce microgreens and wheatgrass in Barcelona and distribute all by bike;
• We research new technologies in order to find optimal ways for growing food in the cities.
• We collaborate with like-minded initiatives to share our knowledge and experience through workshops and public events.
