Nearly fifty years of living out a story I didn’t write 😳

Career choices, relationships, whether I backed myself or didn’t — all quietly shaped by a label I was handed before I was old enough to question it. Sound familiar?

New piece on Substack today. Link in bio — and tell me the label that has shaped your life in the comments šŸ‘‡

Before you unfollow- I’m actually a big fan of gratitude practice — it’s my default setting these days šŸ˜

But in the midst of my midlife implosion, it did nothing except make me VERY ungrateful about being told to be grateful 🤬

Because when your nervous system is properly shot, even the ā€œsimpleā€ tools start to feel like too much.

So if you’re currently scrolling for hours, avoiding emails, or using food and wine to switch your brain off…this isn’t a discipline issue šŸ™šŸ¼

It’s a capacity issue 🤯

And you don’t need another thing to DO.

You might actually need a pause… and to stop ā€˜optimizing’.

What if you just let yourself BE for a change?

At one point in my life, I would recommend breathing techniques and meditation šŸ§˜ā€ā™€ļø

At another point in my life, I could not manage either.

Anyway… that’s the piece.

When life was tough a few years back, I realised how automatic my evenings had become.

The overwhelm at the end of the day. The sofa. The snacks. Usually with a glass of wine (or two) to take the edge off just that bit more šŸ·šŸ«

It had become so habitual I wasn’t even part of the decision-making process anymore.

This week I’ve shared a simple tool I still use now, and that my clients love, because it helped me put the brakes on just enough to start changing things in my life for the better.

The 3Ds: Delay, distract, decide.

Does that end of day autopilot feel familiar?
If so you’ll find full details of the 3Ds over on Substack if you want to try it for yourself (link in bio) šŸ’•

And we keep telling ourselves…
ā€œThis time I’ll try harder.ā€

If you’re in that familiar cycle right now—being ā€œgoodā€, slipping, and feeling like you need to start again—you’re far from alone šŸ’•

But what if the real question isn’t how to do it better?

What if it’s whether this cycle is actually working for you at all?

The one that goes:

Be ā€œgoodā€ → mess up → beat yourself up → repeat šŸ”

Over and over again.

What if you don’t need another restart…

What if you need to recognise that you were never the problem in the first place? ✨

That it’s the cycle—and diet culture that keeps it going—that’s the problem.

If this feels a bit too familiar, I’ve written more about it (and what to do instead) over on Substack šŸ“

Link’s in the bio šŸ‘‡

Maybe it started with ā€œI’ll just relax a little,ā€ and quickly turned into that familiar ā€˜it’s the weekend so no rules apply’ energy šŸ·šŸ«šŸæ

A bit more of this, a bit more of that… and suddenly you’re in full ā€œI’ll deal with it on Mondayā€ mode.

And now here you are, already planning the reset.
ā€œI’ll be good this week.ā€
ā€œI’ll get back on track.ā€

Before you do that, press pause for a minute and bear with me šŸ™šŸ¼

Because if willpower and fresh starts were the answer, they would have worked by now.

Those end-of-day snacks and wine moments? They’re rarely about food. There’s usually something else going on underneath — and until you see that, the cycle just keeps repeating šŸ”‚

I’ve just shared something on emotional eating in midlife that might help you make sense of it all, without more rules or another restart.

Join me on Substack (link in bio) to have a read if this feels a bit too familiar. Subscribe and you’ll get lots more like this in the coming weeks šŸ™šŸ¼

15/04/2026

A lot of women in midlife are told it’s ā€œjust hormones.ā€

And yes — hormones matter. They shift, they fluctuate, they affect everything.

But they’re not the whole story.

Often they’re more like an amplifier… turning up the volume on everything that’s already been building for years šŸ“ˆ

The load.
The pressure.
The holding-it-all-together energy. 🧠

So if things feel harder than they used to, it’s not because you’ve suddenly stopped coping.

It might just be that nothing is being filtered out anymore.

Full piece is on Substack if this resonates āœļø

Well hello again šŸ‘‹ I’ve been a bit quiet on here for a while….. a long while actually šŸ˜†

Life, work, kids, all the usual midlife juggling… and I stepped back from posting for a bit to have a reflect, regroup and reset. It all got a bit much to be honest so I went in search of my mojo!

I found it 🄳 and started writing again — but now over on Substack.

It’s where I’m going to be sharing more of what I’m noticing (and working through myself) around midlife energy, hormones, emotional eating, mindset and why so many of us feel like we’re constantly chasing our tails.

ā¬‡ļø Less ā€œhere’s what you should doā€
ā¬†ļø More ā€œhere’s what’s actually going on and what helps in real lifeā€

If you’d like to read along I’d be delighted to see you over on Substack, you can find me there now offering my twopeneth on how your current morning routine might just be ruining your day. And more importantly, the tiny tweaks that can genuinely change that šŸ’•

šŸ‘‰ have a little read here if you fancy it https://open.substack.com/pub/motherflushingmidlife/p/the-morning-habits-that-are-quietly?r=73mkr2&utm_medium=ios
