Why do we wait until December 31st to make our resolutions?
By then, it’s all so last-minute. We look back on the year, make a few quick promises to ourselves, and come up with goals that often sound good—but rarely reflect any real, deep thought about who we are, where we are in our journey, or what we truly want for ourselves.
And what if you didn’t wait?
What if you started now?
This month.
This week.
Today.
What if you gave yourself the time and space to think more deeply—not just about what you want to do differently, but about who you want to become?
What if you moved beyond the superficial goals and began identifying the things that genuinely matter to you? What if you started taking small, intentional steps toward them now?
Because when January arrives, you wouldn’t be starting from scratch. You would already have begun. You would have created movement, built momentum, and developed a greater sense of clarity and confidence.
You would enter the new year not simply with a list of resolutions, but with awareness, intention, and a direction that is uniquely your own.
So ask yourself:
What do I truly want?
What needs to change?
What have I been putting off?
And what could I begin today that might change the direction of my life?
What would change for you if you started now?

I encourage everyone to read widely. To challenge yourself in your reading. I'm stretching myself this fall by reading more in Spanish and including authors I've never read before - Hemingway is simply for pleasure. Nietzsche (which I may or may not finish)is all about curiosity. The remaining three are professional in nature. I'm interested in knowing what you're reading and why you've chosen those particular authors/topics! Feel free to comment and share.

Sometimes purpose changes quietly, almost imperceptibly — like an old dream that once lit you up but now feels dim, more memory than desire.
Other times, it arrives as a bold, undeniable pull — toward something unfamiliar, something that stirs your soul in ways you can’t quite explain, yet feels deeply alive.
If you’ve been feeling “off” lately — a little misaligned, untethered, or unsure of what’s next — it doesn’t mean you’ve lost your purpose.
It may simply mean your purpose is shifting shape, asking you to grow into a new version of yourself.
The question isn’t “What’s wrong with me?”
The better question is: “What’s unfolding within me?”
Here are a few ways to recognize that evolution, and the questions you can ask to meet it with curiosity instead of resistance:
1. Roles that once defined you no longer fit.
Perhaps the title, responsibility, or identity that used to feel solid now feels constricting. This doesn’t mean you’ve outgrown your worth — it means you’re ready to grow beyond the container that once held you.
Who am I becoming beyond my familiar titles and responsibilities?
2. Your energy is shifting — but the direction feels uncertain.
The things that once energized you may now leave you drained, while new sparks of curiosity or possibility begin to flicker. That sense of restlessness isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a sign of calling.
What am I being drawn toward now, even if I can’t fully name it yet?
3. You crave more meaning in the everyday.
The big goals and achievements matter, but you want more than just milestones. You long for presence, fulfillment, and joy woven into the fabric of ordinary moments.
What experiences do I want more of in my daily life?
These questions are not about fixing yourself. They are about listening more deeply to yourself.
And right now — in this very season — is the perfect time to ask them.
Why? Because the clarity you uncover will guide you toward a life that feels aligned with who you truly are — a life rich with joy, grounded in connection, and filled with moments that will become treasured memories.
You’ll step into this next chapter not with force or frantic effort, but with renewed focus and inspired energy. The kind of energy that doesn’t burn you out but lifts you up.
Because real change doesn’t come from pushing harder.
It comes from aligning more fully with what makes you happy, whole, and deeply alive.

Remember when a cardboard box was a spaceship, a dragon’s cave, or a luxury condo for stuffed animals? Somewhere along the way, the box got recycled, and so did our sense of play. We traded hopscotch for spreadsheets, pillow forts for PowerPoints, and suddenly life started feeling…well, heavier.
Play isn’t just child’s work—it’s human work.
In a world spinning faster than we can keep up—with wars, culture clashes, technological whiplash, and a news cycle that seems to run on espresso shots—our nervous systems weren’t designed for this constant unpredictability. Anxiety sneaks in. Stress settles in. And joy? Sometimes it takes the last train out of town.
Enter play.
Play is the reset button for the mind. Neuroscientists tell us it lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), boosts dopamine (the feel-good one), and sparks creativity. Psychologists add that play builds resilience, helps us process the unknown, and anchors us in the present moment—where fear and “what ifs” can’t reach us.
It doesn’t need to be grand. A spontaneous dance in the kitchen. A game of charades gone hilariously wrong. Doodling with no agenda. Playing fetch with a dog who thinks he’s training you. Even a playful mindset—seeing the absurd in a situation—can loosen the tight grip of fear and make space for laughter.
In fact, play is rebellion. Against burnout. Against seriousness as the only “adult” way of being. Against the idea that fun is frivolous. Play says, “No thanks, I’ll have joy with my coffee today.”
And it matters now more than ever. Because when the world is unpredictable, play teaches us how to flex, adapt, and imagine new outcomes. It’s rehearsal for resilience.
So maybe it’s time we all grabbed the cardboard box again.
A few playful prescriptions for a brighter mind:
• Play with people. Board games, pickup basketball, even telling corny jokes with a friend rewires your brain for connection.
• Play with creativity. Paint, sing, write, or try juggling oranges. Mastery isn’t the goal—laughter is.
• Play with movement. Skip instead of walk. Do cartwheels in the grass. Dance like nobody’s scrolling.
• Play with perspective. Next time life feels too heavy, ask: If this were a comedy sketch, how would it play out?
The world is unpredictable. But you, playful human, have a superpower: the ability to laugh, create, and imagine even in chaos.
And maybe—just maybe—that cardboard box is still waiting for you.

Everywhere we look, the rate of change is accelerating: wars erupt, governments shift, technology advances faster than laws or culture can keep up. Our nervous systems, however, evolved for a slower, steadier world.
Science shows that constant uncertainty and threat cues keep our stress systems in overdrive. The sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight) and the HPA axis (cortisol release) were built for short bursts — a predator attack, a moment of danger — not for 24/7 exposure to global crises, political violence, climate shocks, and information overload.
The result? Anxiety, poor sleep, attention drained, decision-making compromised. Neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky calls this the “mismatch” between ancient biology and modern reality.
Recent events highlight this mismatch:
• Political violence in the U.S. has shaken public trust and increased polarization.
• Global conflicts (Ukraine, the Middle East, Sudan) and rising military spending add to a sense of instability — while also worsening climate stress through emissions.
• Climate crises are escalating: this year saw record coral bleaching and “climate whiplash” events (floods to droughts within weeks).
• The sense that the Doomsday Clock is closer to midnight than ever — reflecting nuclear, climate, and misinformation threats.
Individuals are experiencing record levels of low mood and with it, an increasing demand for mental health resources.
The Stoics, who lived through wars and upheaval of their own, remind us:
“We suffer more in imagination than in reality.” — Seneca
And Rumi offers a softer echo:
“Try not to get tangled in your fears. They are like ropes that hold you back. Leave them behind.”
What we can do — building resilience in a turbulent age
• Limit input: Protect attention. Schedule specific windows for news and social media instead of constant exposure.
• Ground the body: Sleep, exercise, and breathing practices reset the nervous system and lower cortisol.
• Create rituals of stability: Simple routines (morning reflection, evening walk, family meals) add predictability when the world feels chaotic.
• Anchor in values: Clarify what matters most. As Marcus Aurelius said, “You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
• Seek connection: Close relationships buffer the stress response more powerfully than almost anything else.
We cannot stop the speed of cultural, political, and environmental change. But we can train our nervous systems — and our spirits — to remain steady in the storm.
Rumi wrote, “Try to accept the changing seasons of your soul, even if you did not wish for the winter.”
The world will keep shifting. Our task is not to resist the pace of change, but to become grounded enough to adapt with clarity, purpose, and grace.
