I work in travel, so I’m lucky enough to fly regularly. This week, I was due to take a flight, but air traffic control had other plans — my flight was cancelled.

It doesn’t happen often, but when it happens to you, would you know what to do?

When things go wrong… this is when booking a package holiday really matters.

Last Thursday, my flight was cancelled and it really highlighted the difference between booking a package holiday and booking your flights, hotel and transfers separately.

With a package holiday, the different elements are linked together and there is a package organiser responsible for the overall arrangements.

Because we had booked a package, overnight accommodation was arranged, replacement flights were booked, and our holiday accommodation and transfers were dealt with as part of the package. We can also pursue the applicable compensation and expenses for the disruption.

There were plenty of other passengers stranded for around 24 hours who had booked their holiday elements separately.

When you book flights, accommodation and transfers individually, they are separate contracts.

So if your flight is cancelled, the airline deals with the flight — but your hotel may still expect you to arrive, your transfer may treat you as a no-show, and you could be left trying to rearrange everything yourself while also paying additional costs upfront.

Booking separately can sometimes look cheaper at first, but when things go wrong, that saving can quickly disappear.

It certainly reminded me why I recommend looking at the whole holiday package, not just the headline price.

Just got back from your summer holiday and already thinking about the next one? This is one of those TUI offers I’d actually be paying attention to.

As a Travel Consultant, I keep an eye on offers that can genuinely make a difference when you’re planning ahead, and TUI’s Zero Deposit Offer is definitely worth knowing about.

Between 20–26 August 2026, you can book selected TUI holidays with zero deposit, for eligible departures from 1 April 2027 through to 30 April 2028.

And if you’ve been saying, “We’ll book next year once we’ve got our heads around it…” now might be a good time to start looking.
