More Balance Through Our Practice ✨

With the return of the ☀️, nature feels full of energy and expansion , wildflowers blooming, grasses dancing, and landscapes wide open. Pictured here above Grey Mare’s Tail in the beautiful Moffat Hills 🌿

Sometimes all of this outward energy can leave us feeling ungrounded or overwhelmed. This week’s practice will focus on movement and breath to help create more balance, calm, and ease within.

I hope you can join us 🤍

Please note: Thursday Yin class will start slightly later this week only.

Reduce feelings of anxiety and stress

One of my favourite ways to reduce stress is spending time in nature 🌿 This photo was taken on a quiet beach in Donegal.

In this week’s classes, we’ll continue exploring fascia through flowing, gentle movement. Fascia is now thought to play an important role in interoception; our awareness of how we feel inside. Releasing tension in this connective tissue can help reduce feelings of anxiety and stress held deeply within the fabric of the body.

A fun, accessible practice. I hope you can join us 🤍

Back from a wonderful week walking in Ireland and inspired to focus on fascia 🌿
This week’s classes will explore twisting, spiralling, stretching and flowing movements to help release tension, improve flexibility, and create more ease in body and mind.
Sometimes fascia just needs a little space to breathe 🤍

Movement and the four corners of the body

In spring, we work with Wood energy, movement, stretching, and keeping the body mobilised.

This week, we’ll focus on the shoulders and hips, the “four corners” of the body. When they move freely, everything feels easier; when they’re stiff, movement is limited. We’ll use gentle stretches to help release and open these areas.

At the weekend, I visited the V&A Storehouse in East London and saw an image that reminded me how the body can move with ease when there’s space and freedom through the four corners.

“If the roots are deep we can rise and expand”

Digging out old shrub roots at the weekend was tough, they were deep and spread wide. Those deep roots help plants stay strong, find nourishment, and withstand wild, windy weather.

There’s a Chinese saying: “If the roots are deep, the foundation is strong.”

This week we focus on building that strong base. We’ll move from a steady, grounded position, letting go of tension and stiffness. The aim is to feel balanced, able to sink down into the ground (yin) and rise up with ease (yang).

Spring, Vision & the Eyes 🌸👁

In this season of spring, we connect with the Wood element, a time of growth, vision, and renewal. In traditional theory, the liver governs the eyes, inviting us to care for how we see, both physically but also inwardly.

In this week’s practice, we’ll bring gentle awareness to the eyes through focus (Drishti) and simple exercises to soothe and refresh them, especially helpful if they’ve been tired or strained.

I hope you can join me.

Wee reminder that there are no classes this week. But all the spring yin and flow recordings you’ve received over last three weeks will still work. So plenty of movement to keep the sides of the body open and flexible. Look forward to seeing you back on the mat next Wednesday 15th April

We’re exploring Wood energy, working the Liver & Gall Bladder meridians through the sides of the body and inner legs.

Wood grows in any direction, adaptable, creative, always reaching for the light. When balanced, it’s strong yet flexible. When not, it can feel stuck and rigid.

Notice your own flexibility, in body and energy. Honour what you need, and remember, gentle movement can support the shift between seasons.

Above all, do what feels good ✨

This is the last week of winter practice with all classes running.

In this week’s flow, we’ll focus on fluid, flowing movements, working with the spine and hips, alongside some gentle, watery qigong forms. Settling into a few longer holds to support natural mobility, encourage energy flow through the meridians, and blend meditation with posture.

Using the five elements to help find balance

Through yoga, we become more aware of how balance and imbalance feel within the body, mind, and spirit. The five element theory offers a helpful way to observe and understand these relationships within us.

In the mother/child (Shen) cycle, around the clock face. Metal supports Water, and Water supports Wood, reminding us that growth is continuous and interconnected. If one element is weakened, it affects those it nourishes.

In the control (Ko) cycle, across the clock face. Water is balanced by Earth and Fire is balanced by Water. Too much or too little of any element can lead to imbalance.

Ultimately, what we seek is balance among all five elements. Nothing is right or wrong, instead, we learn to notice what imbalance feels like and use the tools of our practice; posture, breath, and intention, to support or harmonise what’s needed.
