One of the questions we get asked a lot is why we don’t use more well-known music in Flow Dance Meditation.
The answer is simple.
When you hear a song you know well, it often takes you somewhere else.
Back to an old relationship.
A summer holiday.
A wedding.
A breakup.
A moment in your life.
The music becomes attached to a story.
And whilst there’s nothing wrong with that, in Flow Dance Meditation we’re often exploring something different.
We’re exploring presence.
When the music is less familiar, there is less for the mind to hold onto.
No lyrics to sing along to.
No memories to replay.
No anticipation of what’s coming next.
Instead, your attention naturally begins to move towards what is happening now.
The sensation in your body.
The rhythm moving through your feet.
The breath in your chest.
The feeling arising in this moment.
The music becomes a doorway rather than a destination.
A way of supporting the nervous system to stay here rather than travelling into the past or the future.
This is one of the reasons we carefully create the music we use.
Not because familiar music is wrong.
But because sometimes the greatest gift music can offer is not a memory.
It’s the experience of being fully alive in the moment you are in. ✨
