Rest is not always peaceful at first.

The moment you stop doing, you finally hear what has been sitting underneath it all. How much you have been carrying. How long you have been quietly running on empty.

This is why it is easier to stay busy. Not because you love the pace, but because slowing down asks you to feel it.

If you have ever tried to rest and felt restless or unsettled instead, you were not doing it wrong.

That is usually where the retreat begins. Not with rest. But with the permission to finally stop.

The real question is whether you give yourself permission.

Maureen came to our Spring retreat last year with her two daughters all the way from the USA 🤍

At first, she wasn’t sure about the cacao ceremony. And honestly, that’s more common than people think.

Many of the mothers who come to our retreats arrive a little unsure about the circles, the ceremonies, or anything that feels different from everyday life.

As mothers, we spend so much time doing, organising, caring and holding everything together that sometimes simply slowing down and receiving care can feel unfamiliar.

But when we allow ourselves to be open, beautiful things can happen.

This morning I went on a hike with a group I didn’t know, organised by my former personal trainer, and if I’m honest I almost didn’t go.

It was a Sunday morning, the kind of time I’m usually with my girls, and I started coming up with all the usual excuses. But then a very clear thought came to me, when was the last time I did something just for me? Not because it’s good for me, not because I’ll burn calories or live longer or learn something or get some kind of benefit out of it in the end. Even though it did give me all of that, that wasn’t the point.

So I stopped overthinking it and just went.

And it was so good. It felt light, it was fun, I felt like myself again without being pulled in a million directions at the same time. I came back home in time for lunch with the girls, but I came back different. In a good mood, more present, with real energy to be with them.

And I kept thinking about how often we talk ourselves out of these small things that are actually exactly what we need.

Anyway, just felt like sharing this here, because maybe you need it too and haven’t even realised it yet 🤍

I came here a few days ago and just walked around slowly, trying to picture our days here… the quiet mornings, the kids finding each other, the kind of conversations that just happen.

It’s beautiful, yes. But it’s also really calm. The kind of place where you naturally slow down.
