The Sensitive Soul
Feels everything deeply. Gets overwhelmed easily. Needs lots of reassurance and connection before they can fully relax into sleep. Bedtime struggles are usually rooted in anxiety, not behaviour.

The High Energy Child
Can’t just switch off. Bedtime resistance is real. Their nervous system needs active help to wind down — stories alone won’t cut it.

The Velcro Baby
Needs your presence to feel safe. Independent sleep can feel impossible because for them, closeness isn’t a want — it’s a need.

The Easy-going Child
Adapts well, settles more easily, happy to go to others. Often the baby that sleep training “works” for — and that’s not luck, that’s temperament.

No type is wrong. No type needs fixing. They just need to be understood.

Temperament is one of the most overlooked yet most important pieces of the sleep puzzle.

It shapes how your child falls asleep, how they respond when they wake in the night, and how they behave throughout the day.

And here’s the thing, we are all born with our own unique temperament.

Some of us are naturally sensitive, some outgoing, some shy, some need lots of connection, some are perfectly happy in their own company.

You cannot change your child’s temperament, and you wouldn’t want to, but you absolutely can work with it.

Temperament is one of The Gentle Approach frameworks that I work with, either my lovely clients 🤍

No amount of stories and shouting are going to relax them to be able to go asleep.

There nervous system is wired…

They need to regulate and relax the nervous system so the body can prepare itself for rest and sleep.

Did you know low iron could be the reason your child can’t settle at night?

If your child takes forever to fall asleep, thrashes around, kicks their legs, or wakes up sweaty and restless, this is worth knowing about.

It’s called restless leg syndrome. And in children, one of the most common causes is low ferritin — the protein in the blood that stores iron.

When ferritin levels are low, the nervous system can become overactive at night. The body simply cannot switch off. And what looks like a child who “just won’t sleep” or “has too much energy at bedtime” could actually be a child whose body is uncomfortable and trying to tell us something.

The good news? It’s a simple blood test. And it’s absolutely worth mentioning to your GP especially if your child also complains of uncomfortable legs or growing pains at night.

I’m not a medical professional and this isn’t medical advice. But as a sleep coach, this is one of the first things I look into when a child is very restless at night. Because there is always a reason for bad sleep.
